Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 2/28/2022

This week is the last week of the 3rd quarter. Please help your student make sure they don't have any zeros in any of their classes and that all missing work has been turned in. We want everyone to get a chance to participate in all the fun activities that happen toward the end of the year in band, but passing and being eligible is a requirement for most of those events.

March 1 Percussion & Makeup Solo Contest

All Beginner, and Symphonic Band PERCUSSIONISTS as well as all advanced band woodwind and brass students who did not attend the first solo contest will perform their solos for a judge after school on Tuesday, March 1 at Hudson Middle School.

The schedule can be found here.

They will need to dress up for their performance (as if it were a job interview) and will receive a rating based on their performance and presentation.

All Beginner Band students will have a solo contest on May 7 - don't worry, your time is coming!

Pre-UIL Showcase Concert

Thursday, March 3rd, 6pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

Honors Band and Wind Symphony students will perform their UIL pieces for parents in the auditorium at Sachse HS. Students will take their contest uniforms home on Wednesday, March 2 so they can change at home on the day of the performance.

Honors Band students will need to be at Sachse High School at 5:20pm. They will perform at 6:00pm in the auditorium, move to the band hall, and sightread at approximately 6:20pm. They should be completely finished by 6:50pm.

Wind Symphony students will need to be at Sachse High School at 5:45pm. They will perform in the auditorium at 6:30pm, move to the band hall, and sightread at approximately 6:55pm. They should be completely finished by 7:20pm.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend!

5th Grade Instrument Demonstration Trip

Congratulations to the following students for earning the opportunity to perform for the 5th graders on our upcoming recruiting trips:

Gerardo Juarez - flute, Levi Schneider - oboe, Bria Griffin - bassoon, Miley Garcia - clarinet, Kylie Atterbury - saxophone, Owen Choate - trumpet, Mosi Solis - French horn, Brendan McDonough - trombone, Hailey Jeffreys - euphonium, Liliana Vega - tuba, Rylan Covey - percussion

These students will travel to our 3 feeder elementary schools to show off their instruments and help us get the 5th graders excited about joining band in GISD. They will perform both this Friday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 22. The itinerary for the performance dates can be found here.

Band Rehearsals During Intersession

We will be holding band rehearsals and open practice/help times for all band students during the week of the Spring Intersession (March 7-11).

Daily Rehearsal Schedule

9-10:30am - Honors Band rehearsal

10:30am-12:00pm - Beginner Band & Symphonic Band practice time/help sessions

1-3pm - Wind Symphony rehearsal

If you will be in town, PLEASE make arrangements to join us for these rehearsals and practice sessions. You do NOT have to be signed up for the intersession to attend the band rehearsals. We will use the back band hall door (#11) for pickup and drop-off during that week.

The U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus is putting on a FREE concert at the Meyerson Symphony Center on Monday, March 7. You can get FREE TICKETS here. This should be a great concert and if you can snag a ticket I would highly encourage you to check it out!

Help Get More Kids In Band!

Do you know any current 5th graders who are coming to Hudson next year?! If so, please share our BAND WEBSITE with them and have them sign up for one of our upcoming instrument fitting drives so we can help them pick an instrument.

Our best recruiters are current and former band parents and students. Your positive words and posts about our program go a long way in helping families choose to join our band. We thank you in advance for your help!

Band Fee Payments

Please take a moment this week to login to your student's Charms account. Make sure to login as a Parent/Student/Member. You will need to use hudsonsoundmachine as the school code. Student passwords should be either just the 6-digit ID number (for first time logins), sID# (that students are used to), capitalized first and last initials plus ID# (HB123456), or something different you or your student has chosen. If you need help resetting a password, please let me know. When you ask for a password to be reset, I will change it to CAPITALIZED first and last initial followed by student ID# (ex. HB123456).

After logging in, you can see payments due in the financial tab, make changes to personal information, see uniform parts that have been checked out, school-owned instrument information, and more.

Spring Band fees are now past due. Please make every effort to take care of this payment ASAP. If you have a financial hardship, please communicate that with us so we can help!

Instrument Usage Fees in Skyward

If your student plays a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, tenor/bari sax, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and select others), their district school-owned instrument usage fee is reflected in their Skyward account now.

We have had to send many instruments to the repair shop this year and this fee helps pay for those repairs and regular maintenance. Please help make sure we can continue repairing instruments as needed by submitting this district fee. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.

What Should We Be Practicing?

Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Be Aware - New Parking Changes at Hudson

  • In order to better ensure the safety of students, and to assist with the movement of traffic, No Parking/Standing/Stopping between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm signs will be placed in the 4400 block of Hudson Drive on both the north and south sides of the road. This will be in effect on school days only.
  • These signs will be installed Monday, February 21, 2022. These will be added in addition of the current No Parking signs. If you are picking up your students, please join one of the student pick-up lines for both schools (remember, Hudson Middle School is also releasing students to the rear drive of the school as well). If you have to park, please utilize either the gravel or paved lots of Heritage Park. Please review the attached map to see where these signs will be placed.
  • Are You Handy? Like to Build Things?

I have grand visions of organizing our percussion storage room over the next few weeks because it's too small and we have too much equipment. If you happen to be handy and want to help build shelves for our cymbals, drum pads, and drum stands, please let me know! This picture is similar to what I have in mind.
