What's Happening, Tate?
October, 2020
Dear Families,
Enclosed is a monthly newsletter in an attempt to improve our communication, and include reminders of upcoming events and important dates.
Thanks to all of you who have persevered thus far through Trimester 1 of this 2020-2021 school year. After starting school online, then transitioning to the Hybrid A & B schedule, it feels as if we are finally reaching a routine. It's so nice to have our Warriors in the building making connections, touching base with teachers and having the feeling of normalcy return.
Typically, your students schedule will be built and remain the same, however, the ICCSD, is asking you to select a choice each trimester. So this will require an action from you. Below is an excerpt from the an email received from Interim Superintendent, Matt Degner.
All families must indicate an enrollment preference for the second trimester as soon as possible, but no later than November 4, 2020. This must be completed in PowerSchool by all families, whether you wish to switch between enrollment modes or stay in your current enrollment mode. Please sign in to your PowerSchool account and click the “Permissions” link on the left side of the page.
Scroll to the bottom of the permissions list to find the Trimester 2 Enrollment Selection permission. Here, you will indicate whether you are choosing Option A or Option B (described below). Please repeat this process for every student in your family.
- Option A: Enroll the student in a standard class section. This section will follow our Continuum of Learning Models and may meet fully on-site, in a hybrid scenario (partially on-site, partially off-site), fully off-site, or any combination of these throughout the year, depending upon current state guidance and local health conditions.
- Option B: Enroll the student in the ICCSD PK-12 Online Learning Program, which will enroll the student in online coursework for the entire trimester.
After families have made their choices we will begin making schedules. Thanks for your patience while we navigate our several options.
Please know we are here for you; our hope is for student to attend on the days the 2 or 3 days they are assigned. It's so important that they show up and complete the assignments. If you are having difficuluties with the schedule, getting your student to school or your student is feeling overwhelmed, please call the office and notify us. We can problem solve together to get your student back on track!
As always if you every have any questions or concerns, do not hesistate to email or call.

Introducing: CORR Warrior of the Month
Every month, students caught exuding CORR values will be nominated by staff to be dubbed "CORR Warrior of the Month".
Congratulations, Kris Platt, on being the first!
October's CORR Warrior of the Month
Year in school: JUNIOR
Horoscope: LEO
Mantra: I really like the quote "know that you're whole" from Hedwig & the Angry Inch
Superstitions: I'm paranoid about everything so I think I have like every superstition that's ever existed
Show everyone should watch: Community
Favorite Tate memory: sledding at Hoover school
Dream job: scare actor or animator
CORR value on display: Caring
Nominating staff (Ms. Hauskins): On the first day of school, I saw Kris approach a new student, introduce herself and invite the new student to join her table of friends. Kris exudes the Warrior CORR values on a daily basis and this was just one example of her truly caring heart. Proud to know you, Kris!
Kris' take: I think that was Paige! We're good friends now :)
Here for Support: Tate's Student Advisory Center (SAC)
Students can utilize the SAC during rough mental health days or conflicts with peers or staff. They can also get connected with all sorts of community resources (housing, food assistance, employment search, medical/mental health appointments, etc.) Students can also ask for access to the Tate Takeaway--a pantry stocked with food and hygiene items free to take home.
If a student is having a hard time with a specific teacher or with another student, the SAC also serves as an in-between mediator to help resolve the conflict and get on with their day.
No matter what your need, Mrs. Hauskins and Ms. Remington are the people to find!
New at Tate: our Gym & fitness center!
The new Tate gym and fitness room has already been popular with our students and staff!
Thanks to everyone who had a hand in making it happen.
P.E. students as well as general ed students have enjoyed using it during class, at lunch and after school.
Popular choices have been indoor basketball, utilizing the volleyball net and throwing frisbees and footballs.
To reduce risk, everyone is expected to sanitize their hands when entering and leaving the gym & fitness center. The equipment is also sanitized after each use and sits overnight before it can be used the next day.
Wednesday the 28th was our first Tate Volleyball Open gym.
There is a possibility of us hosting the Cedar Rapids Metro team.
We also look forward to hosting a Basketball season after the volleyball season.
Other future gym activities (when it's COVID safe) will be Prom and Movie Nights.
As always in the gym we wear masks 100% of the time because, "Wearing is Caring!"
Go Warriors!

Staff Spotlight - Ms. Curry
My Role at Tate: I teach English!
I Hail From: Williamsburg, Iowa originally -- but I've been in Iowa City for 25 years, so that's the place I call "home."
My Path to Tate: Tate has actually been my dream teaching job since before I became a teacher! I was 38 years old when I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up, so I came to the game late. I taught at West Branch High School for three years, and then taught at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School for four years before getting the privilege to join the Tate team.
Favorite day/part of the year: I love a Thursday because you get all of the delicious anticipation and possibility of the weekend without actually "spending" any of the weekend time yet. It's like the Christmas Eve of days-of the-week.
Someone who inspires me: I'm inspired by my students and my own children because I'm privileged to see a spark of what's best in humanity in them each and every day. Might be corny, but it's true. :-)
Catch me on the weekends doing: Not much! I'm a weekend homebody. You can find me hanging out with my 3 sons, my dog, my cat, and way too many books.
What I would tell 16 year old me: First of all, she wouldn't listen. But despite that, I would tell her that each and every year gets better, no matter what trials or unmatchable joys they may seem to bring; that whatever comes, she will get through and be better on the other side. Then she would roll her eyes at me and say, "You just don't get it!" and storm out of the room.
My most important CORR value: Caring, because I think that the others stem from it. You must care about others in order to really demonstrate Respect and Responsibility. You must care about yourself to really be able to take Ownership and to truly understand the need for and purpose of Respect and Responsibility. Without Caring, everything else is just going through the motions.
"Without caring, everything else is just going through the motions"

Staff Spotlight - Ms. Ebony
Name: Ms. Ebony
My Role at Tate: paraeducator: hall supervisor, T3 online program coordinator
I Hail From: Chicago, IL - the West side, the BEST side
My Path to Tate: Graduated from Tate in 2011, played around at some call center/insurance jobs. Came back to man the halls in 2015. Stuck like glue ever since. Tate is my family away from home.
Favorite day/part of the year: Saturday mornings: I cook breakfast and can sit and eat and enjoy without being on the go
Someone who inspires me: Myself. I've become just a fraction of the woman I wanted to be but I'm not even close to the girl I used to be
Catch me on the weekends doing: cleaning, blasting music and dancing while doing so, Binge watching crime TV, shopping
What I would tell 16 year old me: Girl, you should tackle college right after highschool. The boy you love now you probably won't love forever, so take it slow. You have your whole life to grow up. Don't rush it.
My most important CORR value: Respect. Respect the custodian as you would a CEO. You never know who you might see when climbing the ladder. Treat others as you want to be treated.
"Tate is my family away from home"
