Around the School
On March 7, the 4th and 5th grade class of Grand View Elementary will be attending a children’s concert put on by the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra, thanks to the generosity of the Grand View PTA and Bruneau PTO. The theme of the concert is Dances from Around the World, and both Mrs. Lawrence’s and Mrs. Malika’s classes have been studying and experiencing some of the dances. The program covers six different cultural dances that are nationalistic to the area they come from. We have been learning about the importance of folk music in all cultures and how most famous dances use folk music that everyone knows. The dances are all very different, from the graceful and elegant Viennese waltz to the lively and spirited Slavonic Dance from the Czech Republic, to the pentatonic Dance of the Yao People from China.
In preparation for the concert, the 4th and 5th grade classes have begun their annual unit on instruments, studying the different families (woodwind, brass, string and percussion) in preparation both for the upcoming concert and their future as potential Rimrock music students. In the second week of February, they finished their woodwind unit and were treated to a live demonstration by Ms. Volk of several of the instruments.
This concert is a unique opportunity for our 4th and 5th graders. According to the Boise Philharmonic website, “students learn about instrument families and sounds, concert etiquette, composers, orchestral repertoire, and how music and sound ties into their daily lives and studies”. For more information about the upcoming concert, you can visit boisephil.org/education/childrens-concerts.
Caught Using Kelso's Choices!
Classroom Corner
Mrs. Draper (Preschool): All is going good in PreK. We have only 6 letters left to learn and we will be through the whole alphabet. We talk about why we are learning our letters (names and sounds) and we know it is so we can learn to read. Yes, soon we will be putting letters together to form and sound out CVC words!
Ms. Davis (Kindergarten/First): Kindergarten has continued learning new spelling patterns and sight words to help with their early reading and writing skills. In math, kindergarten is learning about different number patterns, adding zero and one, and the different ways to make 10. First grade has been decoding multisyllabic words to strengthen their reading and writing skills. In math, first graders have been working on solving multi digit addition and subtraction problems, practicing story problems, and learning about time. As we move into spring I am excited to see the growth my class continues to make. I am very proud of the hard work they have all put in so far. Keep it up K/1!
Ms. Baker: Our classroom has been focusing a LOT on Grit and mindset this year and it's really paying off! The students have been facing challenges in various subjects and their attitude towards those challenges is amazing to see. In first grade math we've been spending a lot of time looking at place value and how we can apply it to addition. Second grade has been working super hard on money and time. As motivation for the students I told them that if they did really well on their winter reading benchmarks I would dye my hair a super fun color. They rocked it! So now I have blue/green/teal hair!
Mrs. Meyers (Second Core): The second graders are working on learning the many ways nature changes. They have been reading a variety of different texts to learn about the different seasons, day and night, and why they happen. They have been working hard on learning how to tell time on an analog clock to the nearest 5 minutes as well as doing some elapsed time problems. They are now moving on to learning how to use different tools to measure a variety of objects. They will be learning about the yardstick, meter stick, ruler, and measuring tape and learning about when we use them.
School Board Presentations
Kindergarten/First: K/1 presented a small portion of their PBL with the board. They shared one thing they learned about rivers and the river maps they created.
1/2 Grade: 1/2 presented what we have learned so far about germs as well as the song we created about the types of germs.
3rd Grade: Third grade told the board about the class book we are making and then they each presented an interesting fact about their endangered animal.
4th Grade: The 4th graders shared important facts about wind power, nuclear energy, natural gas, biomass energy and coal.
5th Grade: Fifth grade presented a timeline made using informative texts about John Brown and the Underground Railroad.

At Home
Our students have been working with Tom Thelen's VictimProof curriculum again this year in order to work on our sense of community, climate, and culture within our schools. Remember, climate is how it feels in the school, while culture is what we do.
In Chapter 1 of VictimProof, we learn that Tom has some secrets of success to share with us! Tom tells us that he first got help from an adult, and then he learned to let go of the pain he had through forgiveness. Tom shared that he believes that both of these steps are necessary to lead a healthy and safe life.
Although it may be difficult, it is important to take the pain from your past and turn it into a positive thing. We can use that pain to help others, instead of staying bitter. The opposite of bitterness is forgiveness- letting go of our pain and being willing to move on. Students have been talking and sharing about the benefits to forgiveness over bitterness in community groups the past few weeks.
Some Questions You Can Ask at Home:
- What do you think it means for someone to be "Victimproof?"
- Why do you think victims of bullying often turn into bullies?
- What happens when you hold onto bitterness and unforgiveness?
- How is forgiveness like setting yourself free?
- How can you help your friends at school become victimproof?
