5K Veteran's Day Race
The Early Explorers have been working hard this past month. In math they have been learning numbers, and have practiced making 1, 2, and 3 using play-dough. We have continued our work on shapes, and they are even able to make triangles and rectangles with their bodies! Music is a favorite with the three year olds. They love to sing along with Mrs. Mealer, and play the instruments she brings. We have two new centers in our room, the post office, and the hot cocoa stand. The students love dressing up as the mailman and UPS driver. We had our 2nd parent day just this week! Parents joined in for music and dramatic play with their child. The Early Explorers loved it, and the smiles on the parents’ faces make me think they enjoyed themselves too.
Beginners Drama Club
During session 2 of the after school program students in grades 3-6 had a chance to dip their foot in the acting pool. During the Beginners Drama Club students were introduced to line memorization, stage directions, and how to use their voice to show emotions. The 5 week program was a great way for students try out drama club before the big spring production.
Students choose to participate in a scene from Cinderella or Peter Pan. They practiced everyday after school, figuring out where to stand and how best to deliver their lines. All their practice paid off in a final production for parents on November 13th. As the students left with smiles on their face, they talked about how it was a little scary but so much fun to perform. Some dress rehearsal videos can be found on our Facebook page. Look for some of our Beginning Drama Club students in the spring play!
Learning Prepositions in Speech
Prepositions, such as in front, behind, and next to, are important to understand for a student’s success at school. They are essential to enable our students follow classroom directions (e.g. “Put your library books in the bin next to my desk.”). They can be a difficult skill to master, but our students in Mrs. Graham’s preschool classroom are up for the challenge! They followed directions using these prepositions to create their own book. The students LOVED taking turns being the “teacher” and sharing their book with their friends. Parents can look for these books in their child’s backpack and encourage them to practice this skill at home.
