Letter from the Principal
Dear West High Families,
It is with great pleasure I write to you this letter of introduction. My name is April Tidwell, and I am the new Head Principal of West High School. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead a building that has such a strong sense of community and positive culture! I began my career in education 17 years ago as a science teacher. My family and I moved to Sioux City in 2009. Since then I have served in various roles in the Sioux City Community Schools, from science teacher to Curriculum Director. I am excited to bring my leadership experience to West High where I will work with you and our quality teachers and staff to ensure your student’s success.
Our administrative team has been working this summer to prepare for the best year yet! Ms. Rebecca Rieken, Assistant Principal, comes to WHS from West Middle. Her main areas of supervision will include special education and attendance. Mr. Ron Koch, Assistant Principal, will lead and coordinate the freshman house. He will share his time at both West High and West Middle, ensuring a smooth transition for all of our students. Mr. Al Pace will lead all activities and athletics in his role as Assistant Principal/Athletic Director. Each of us bring unique leadership skills to the team that will only make WHS stronger.
You can stay connected to upcoming activities and events through our social media accounts and our website.

This year, the building focus will continue to be on literacy (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Simply put literacy is the foundation for all learning. In every content area, students will need to be able to read, write, speak and listen effectively no matter what their future holds. At West High School, the teachers and staff will work to provide engaging and relevant learning experiences both in and out of the classroom that prepare all students for college and/or future careers. Teachers will utilize daily writing, close reading and open response writing to sharpen the students’ literacy skills.
In alignment with the District strategic plan Focus 2022, our teachers and staff will work to maintain high expectations for all students because we Believe that all students can Achieve and Succeed. Two goal areas we will focus on at West High are:
- Provide relevant, rigorous and innovative academics
- Provide safe, healthy and supportive learning environments.
I am excited to be your Principal, and I look forward to partnering with you in your child’s education. Please feel free to call or email me, or any member of the administrative team, with concerns or input you may have throughout the school year.
Best Regards,
April Tidwell
