Vice President Andrew Lie attended District PTO meeting was along with Westmoor's Open House and enjoyed seeing our incoming students and guardians touring the campus. He mentioned Oceana Interim list of activities returning to their campus; a program that allows students to study topics of interest for the week. He concluded with him continuing to fight for better ways to support the students and staff of this District.
Clerk Carla Ng-Garrett thanked the Student Trustees for sharing their school activities with the Board. She also was thrilled to see so many students and staff members dressing up for Halloween and the return of school spirit, along with Westmoor High School holding a Dia de los muertos celebration at their site on November 1st.
Trustee Nick Occhipinti acknowledged that November is Native American History Month and it's important to continue speaking up for equity in the community. He almost mentioned that November is Public Policy Month, and the importance to exercise civility on a regular basis, especially in the San Francisco area. He also mentioned the importance of providing a virtual meeting option, as well as in person, for all future meetings.
Trustee Kalimah Salahuddin shared that she does her best to be a light for our Student Trustees, especially during their Monday Student Advisory Board meetings. She also thanked everyone who supported the District during the October 25th Daly City Council Meeting, including past and present JUHSD staff. Along with being a school board member, she is very active in the community and is concerned about San Mateo's 26 ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) transfers and how that connects to our students and their families.

Students Share Out!
Student Trustees Mustafa Abuzahriyeh (WHS), Charles Green (JHS), Katalina Huazano (TNHS), and Madeline Hur (OHS) attended the November 2nd board meeting with news to share!
Trustee Abuzahriyeh shared that Westmoor High School recently elected their 9th grade class officers. This past Friday, the student government class set up candy stations around campus, along with areas to write positive notes to their peers. He also noted that the school's volleyball and tennis teams have qualified for league finals; the school is excited to see them advance to the final rounds!
Trustee Huazano mentioned that Terra Nova High School's fall Open House, along with 8th grade tours, went/are going well. She shared that last week felt incredibly short due to an unforeseen power outage. The shortened week commenced with a food fair and the return of their annual homecoming. Starting this Friday, she shared that the site's peer-help class will host activities with the District's Adult Transition Program. She concluded her presentation with site fall sports coming with winter sports gearing up for their new season.
Trustee Hur mentioned Oceana High School successfully hosting their first outdoor rally this past week. She shared that peer support and tutoring has begun, including the start of their core advisory program. Students have shared COVID-19 concerns with the site's academic council and feel like their voices are being heard.
During the start of each board meeting, it's always a treat to hear our Student Trustees eloquently share site updates and concerns with the school Board of Trustees and Executive Cabinet. At the November 16th meeting, we look forward to hearing our Student Trustees share new campus updates, questions, comments, and concerns related to their JUHSD school sites.
COVID-19 Updates
*Individual PCR testing for staff is now available at all school sites. Please note that testing times have been changed in order to meet the drop box pick-up. Testing happens weekly between 7:30 and 8:30 am until 2:00 pm at all sites, except the District Office ending at 3:00 pm.
Site testing locations:
Monday - Thornton (am), DO/Adult School (pm)
Tuesday - Jefferson High School
Wednesday - Westmoor High School
Thursday - Terra Nova High School
Friday - Oceana High School
*Student testing started this week with them testing on the same days as staff at their respective sites. Students wishing to test may do so before school, during brunch, and lunch.
*The number of positive COVID-19 cases spiked during the end of October; however, are still on an overall downward trend for the school year. In September, there were a total of 16 cases with 7 new cases being presented in October. For November, thus far, we’ve had 2 reported cases.

Items to Note
*AFT 1481 President Monica Casey reported that everyone receives weekly Union communications through district email so all staff members can stay up to date with events taking place throughout JUHSD and San Mateo County. She shared upcoming information about San Mateo's TIP (Trades Induction Program) and that she attended John Meyers' 40th retirement celebration at Jefferson High School. She is glad staff COVID-19 testing continuing at our school sites, along with the start of student COVID-19 testing. This week, she'll meet with her CFT (California Federation of Teachers) counterparts and looks forward sharing, and applying, new ways in which the District can make education better for our students.
*Associate Superintendent of Student Services Dorene Basuino presented on enrollment trends currently within our District. Of note, the current enrollment for this 2021-2022 is 3,997, including students currently participating in remote independent study, non-public students, and students in the District's Adult Transition Program. Ms. Basuino shared that during the 2014-2015 school year, enrollment data showed 4685 students in the District. She noted this declining enrollment concern was not just present within JUHSD, but neighboring high school districts, too. To see the full presentation, please click here.
*Wren Maletsky, Executive Director at Summit Public Schools, Shasta, shared a slides presentation on the charter school's recent enrollment trends, college data, attendance statistics, student demographics, staff updates, and their newly created Summit Together and Unfinished Learning model with a focus on "acceleration versus a remediation" approach to instruction. She noted that 100% of the students who attend Summit Shasta live in the Daly City community, with 40% of the current student body being involved with site athletics and over 40 students clubs are active at their school.
