COLLEGE COUNSELOR'S CORNER
I’m pleased to announce some exciting changes coming to the Guidance Office at MCCHS!
As of Friday, September 28th, college admission counselors can now schedule times to visit MCCHS electronically using RepVisits. RepVisits will allow Mrs. Diamond to publish our fall and spring visit schedules easily and quickly, allowing college admissions counselors the ability to sign up for visits to Marian with the click of a button. I on-boarded RepVisits at my former school in the Fall of 2017, and the number of colleges that visited us that fall increased from roughly 70-80 to almost 120. We’ve already had exciting movement with RepVisits this fall here at Marian, with schools like Texas Christian University, Texas A&M, and Northwestern University all slated to visit after finding us on RepVisits!
Another big change is coming to the way Marian students can engage with the college search process. Our office is adopting a web-based program called SCOIR (pronounced “Score”). Some of the features of this program include:
- An engaging college search tool that allows students to search for colleges that fit their unique personal and academic interests.
- The ability for students to follow college admission offices’ social media accounts so they can receive personalized news and information about schools in a relevant way.
- The ability for parents to follow along and participate in their children’s college search and selection processes.
- A central communication platform that’ll allow me and the other school counselors to reach students and parents (individually and in groups) with useful tips and important information about the college search process.
- A vehicle for Mrs. Diamond to submit transcript and letters of recommendation to colleges electronically all at once.
In Spring 2019, SCOIR will launch an interest inventory that Marian students can use in partnership with YouScience. This will add another dimension to the college search process by allowing students to explore the world of work as they explore potential college fits.
Since our transition to SCOIR involves the transfer of student as well as parent data, parents will receive a letter shortly with more detailed information highlighting what specific student and parent data will be transfered to SCOIR for use in the program. Parents will also be given an option to opt out of having their individual data transferred into the program.
Our goal is to launch SCOIR for use by the current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester.
The Guidance Team and I look forward to seeing how these new tools will provide more exposure to the world of college and career for our students as well as an easy way for more colleges to visit us and meet them!
