Hubbard Woods Update
November 29, 2021
Principal Update:
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
I hope that everyone had some good family time over break. I spent the first weekend of break attending a conference entitled, "Learning and the Brain." I had three full days of learning and look forward to sharing some of my learnings with our community. Here are a few of my takeaways.
- Anxiety is contagious. When someone speaks to you about their anxieties, the best defense is to ask them questions about how they are feeling. This will keep you focused on helping them and not adopting their worries.
- A child’s profile for learning to read is predominantly determined by their language skills. There is a direct correlation of how many quality back and forth verbal conversations a child has, before they are five, and their strength as readers in third grade.
- When a child is exhibiting negative behavior, ignore the behavior (where possible) and figure out the problem that caused the behavior.
- Mental health means that we are feeling the right emotion at the right time, not that we are always happy.
- Specifically teaching children how to calm their brains is essential to regulation and mental health. Utilizing breathing techniques and moving your body are the easiest ways to gain control.
Thank you for your support of the Book Fair and thank you to the PTO for another wonderful event. Please note that you can still support the PTO with the online book fair. https://www.abcfairs.com/
Thank you as well for the donations to Bernie's Book Bank! See below for another opportunity.
From Mr. Wendt:
"Our Winter Sing is evolving this year to accommodate and welcome smaller audience sizes into our school. Please join us for our Winter Showcase, which will be in the form of an open house/gallery walk-through of the Hubbard Woods hallways, concluding with a short family singalong in the auditorium. All students at Hubbard Woods are curating a multimedia presentation focused on the word "welcome".
Hubbard Woods families are invited to specific showcase times. We tried to evenly disperse Hubbard Woods families throughout the day. We will also be providing links to our work online for those who are unable to join us.
Here's how it works:
1. Pick up your child(ren). Homeroom teachers will send them to the front lobby to meet you at your showcase time.
2. Walk through the hallway exhibits. Directions will be clearly marked.
3. After 20 minutes of gallery walking, enter the auditorium for a family singalong of our winter sing favorites!
