A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week, our writers continued to write how-to books on topics they know how to do really well. We have books on so many topics: How to Make Your Bed, How to Brush Your Teeth, How to Make Noodles and even How to Give a Hug! Students continue to use their How To Helpers anchor chart to make sure they are including all of the important parts of a how to book. After Thanksgiving, writers will learn how to say hello to their reader with a catchy introduction, and how to say goodbye with a conclusion.
Math: This week, students began to work with the "make 10" strategy for adding numbers. They practiced making an organized math drawing to show how they can make a friendly 10 to help them add. This is a tricky concept! There is an amazing resource on YouTube from an educator who makes student-friendly videos to reinforce Eureka math concepts. I have included the link below. These videos would be great for students to watch at home for reinforcement if they are having difficulty and they are great for parents too so they know the strategy being taught in class.
Word Study: This week, we explored the digraph <ck>. Students learned that if a word ends with the /k/ sound, and has a short vowel sound immediately before the /k/, it will end with <ck> (pick, back, stick, clock, neck, etc.) Next week, we will work with "r blends" such as cr, dr, pr, tr, and gr.
Working hard on that Make 10 strategy!
Expected behavior at GP
Keep hands and feet to self.
Maintain a safe body.
Use kind words.
Sit in a way that respects the space of those around you.
Follow directions right away and do your job.
Keep voice at the expected level (silent when a teacher is teaching or giving directions)
I kindly ask that you remind your child about these expectations and encourage them to make good choices throughout the day. Together, we can help our students learn and grow in a safe and positive environment. Thank you!
