News From the Office

Just a Few Loose Ends

At morning drop-off, please choose a lane that is open. We're trying to clear Spencer Road and keep the flow moving. Remember, please pull all the way forward until the car in front of you stops. When that car stops, that's where you get to drop off your child. This will allow for multiple vehicles to get through our drop-off areas and you can carry on with the day.

A new Dash of Salt is coming and will be posted next week, - it's called Focus.

Halloween is coming and because of COVID, we're going to do things a little bit differently. Your child can wear their costume to school if you wish. Please remember, no bloody, gory, or scary masks. As always, no weapons. We won't have a parade this year and we can't have helpers in the classes for parties. You'll want to check with your child's teacher to see what might be planned. In addition, The Spencer PTO is planning something fun off-campus.

We will have outside recess unless the weather is raining too hard, lightning, or thunder. Please be advised we'll head out most days.

Wednesdays are remote learning days. In order for us to count the day for the State of Michigan, the assignments need to be completed and submitted on Wednesdays. If you are having difficulty with anything on a given Wednesday, send an email to your child's teacher and he/she can help troubleshoot or address your concerns.

Our BVA Picture Day is scheduled for this Wednesday, October 14th from 9:00 AM - Noon. There is no Sign-Up Genius, just arrive when it's most convenient for you. Lifetouch will be set up in the Multi-Purpose Room on the east end (playground side) of the building and there will be a staff member there to assist and help to maintain social distancing. Please remember to wear a mask while you are in the building, and of course, students will take them off briefly to have their photo taken.

Now Hiring

Spencer is currently looking for a few building substitutes. For those interested, the building substitute would teach a class following the lesson plan left by the teacher. The commitment is four days a week, with Wednesdays off. The pre-requisite is at least 60 completed credit hours of college. If you would love to join The Amazing Spencer Elementary, please let us know by calling 810-299-4350 for more information.

Extra Change of Clothing

With the current COVID restrictions, we are not able to offer a change of clothes if your child has an accident, or stumbles in a mud puddle, or gets a nose bleed, or has a mishap in the cafeteria...therefore, it would be helpful if you kept a change of clothing in your student's backpack. If your student does not have spare clothes, we will be calling home to have you bring a change of clothing. Thanks for your assistance with this.

Picture Day is Coming

SMILE! Picture Day for our In-Person Roadrunners will be on Tuesday, October 13th. Picture Day for our Virtual (BVA) Roadrunners will be on Wednesday, October 14th from 9AM-Noon in the Multi-Purpose Room at Spencer. Our Picture Re-take Day is scheduled for December 1st. Picture ordering information to order online along with the Picture ID and a copy of the ordering form that went home this week are below.

The 2019-2020 Yearbooks are in the office! We still have a few extras available for purchase. They are $10 (cash only). Contact the office if you'd like to reserve a copy.

Thank you to everyone in the BVA who stopped by this past Wednesday to pick up your yearbook and art projects from last year! If you were unable to make it to Spencer, you will have the opportunity to pick up your items on Picture Day this coming Wedneday.

Teacher Wish List

The PTO organized a signup genius for our heroes here at Spencer Elementary! Please help us show appreciation for them and fulfill these wish list items for your child's classroom or favorite staff member. Don't forget to use Amazon Smile as a portion of the sales goes back to the PTO! THANK YOU!

Chipotle Night

Save the Date for our First PTO Restaurant Night of the year. Order from Chipotle in Brighton on Tuesday, October 20th from 5-9pm and 30% of the sales will be donated back to Spencer PTO.

The company is generously encouraging takeout and online orders. Use the code YL3PH2G when placing an order.

Box Tops

We will be doing one collection of Box Tops paper clippings this fall (no contest, though). If you have any left, please send them in with your student(s) between now and 10/23. Please put loose clippings in baggies. As always, PLEASE clip them (don't throw entire tops of boxes in) and check expiration dates before sending in.

Precious Prints Fundraiser

Local business owner and Spencer parent, Emily Alford, of Precious Prints is once again offering Spencer families the opportunity to participate in a holiday ornament/magnet fundraiser that will earn Spencer 25% of sales. Because we cannot hold an after school event to create these ornaments as we did last year, Emily is offering "paint your own" kits of ornaments or magnets that kids can create at home. These make great gifts or could be used for art enrichment on a virtual Wednesday. Not only is this a ton of fun for the kids and an opportunity for them to create memorable gifts for loved ones, it is an opportunity to raise some money for the PTO. Please see the flyer for details and sign up information.

Note From the Counselor

Counselor Corner!

Hello from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs McKiddy! I have very much enjoyed our start to a great school year. I spent the month of September visiting classrooms for a social-emotional lesson centered around resiliency and working through challenges. I have also increased visits with individual students needing social-emotional support. I am working hard to add some peer support groups by the end of the month! As the year progresses, I am continuing to connect with classroom teachers for referrals for students who are struggling or may need additional support. If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.

We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Please feel free to contact your counselor with any questions or concerns that you may have, and Mrs. Fox or Mrs. McKiddy will do their best to support your child.

Note from the Cafeteria

When packing your student's lunchbox, please remember to pack straws, utensils, napkins, or any condiments they might need. We only have a limited supply (and no supply of any condiments this year) on hand in the cafeteria, and when it's gone we won't have any to share with your student.
