Team Builders...Thanks Melissa!
Team Builders
We have talked about culture on several occasions. This time of the year is when stress levels begin to rise, so I thought it to be perfect time to share these :)
Jimmy Fallon Games: Use these easily as team-builders to begin a staff meeting.
Face Off - 2 hand mirrors; note cards with faces to make- ie creepy smile, caught in your zipper, double chin, etc. first one to laugh loses; count to three and reveal. (Ellen Degeneres)
Draw and Write: not a Fallon game but loads of fun Headbandz - Vocab development. (board game)
Whisper Challenge- headphones with music. Words or phrases on cards (risqué video—all depends on the words you choose!)
Best Friend Challenge- read question card; write answer on white boards. Partner must guess how you would answer.
Box of Lies: randomly choose a box and tell the other person what is inside; can lie or tell truth; must say truth or lie.
Antler Ring Toss (self explanatory)
Word Sneak- words on a card that you have to work into conversation so that others don’t notice.
Three Word Stories- Word cards that you have to get the other person to say
5 Second Summaries- movie titles on cards; 5 sec to describe the plot so partner can guess the movie. No words from the title or actor's names can be used.
Jinx Challenge- categories on cards like “fruits”, “animals”, or “etc”. Count to three and say and answer. If you match you move in. Not match- try again
Google Hangout for Digital Coaching
Do you hangout? Many of you are probably already using this to collaborate with teachers or other administrators. If not, it’s a great collaborative tool that has video chat, instant messaging, and screen share in a digital space or hangout. I have already hung out with several of you, so if you are not accustomed to hanging out, check out this brief wikiHow to walk you through it. I look forward to hanging out.
Leveraging Good Questions
Asking a good question is like flipping a switch in the mind. Quality questions are vital to any effective coaching/growth model. When providing feedback during walks, how can you leverage your time by asking questions that deliver actionable responses? Here are a few examples:
Alignment
Non-example-How can you improve alignment in your classroom?
Example-What specific student outcomes are you looking for when students complete the problem independently?
Rigor
Non-example-How do you ensure student thinking is consistent with the level of the TEKS?
Example-When evaluating student responses, what are you looking for to ensure their understanding is consistent with the level of the TEK(s)?
Engagement
Non-example-I have noticed that on the last two walkthroughs, the level of compliance has exceeded the level of authentic engagement. In what ways are you preparing your lessons for authentic engagement? How are you incorporating student voice/culture into this decision?
Example-How do you know when your students are engaged? What specific considerations do you make when planning to engage students in learning?
Content Area Look For's
The documents linked below are a draft of what you should see while conducting walks in specific content areas. This should provide you some support in coaching your educators. Please let me know your thoughts so we can edit the documents. :)
