The detectives division at the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office has seen a rise in “catphishing” scams against juveniles stemming from suspects outside of the United States. Often, the scammers will display a stock image found on the internet and create a profile using the picture. Once the juvenile has followed or friended the suspect, the suspect will often ask for inappropriate images of the juvenile in an attempt to blackmail them for money or additional images. Below are some steps you can take should your child possibly be the victim of these scams:

• DO NOT FOLLOW OR FRIEND ANYONE THAT YOU CAN NOT VERIFY THEIR IDENTITY!

• If your child has disseminated inappropriate images, your child’s electronic device should undergo an “erase all content”.

• ALL social media accounts associated with the scam should be restarted under a new profile name, profile picture, and create a new password.

• Help your child to change passwords on social media and block suspect(s) they have communicated with.

• Photos will typically be backed-up in the cloud as well, these will need to be deleted.

• If after taking all possible steps, the problem persists, contact law enforcement. You may be required to surrender the electronic device to officers in order for them to erase all content and prevent further victimization.
