Eight graders in Ms. Littleton's science class each made their own model of a galaxy. Galaxies were either spiral, elliptical, or irregular in structure. They then added their galaxies together to form a class universe. They then analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of this simple digital model and soon understood how insanely large the scale of these things are in real life!

As we move closer to a year since quarantine life began, we reflect on how the COVID pandemic has changed us as teachers and students. Teaching and learning has never looked so different, yet so much the same. As my students began the year in the hybrid model, I began to notice many of them choosing to make work about their personal lived experience during the pandemic. From early days of quarantine life to the current state of remote classrooms. Noticing this, I wanted to find a way for them to connect with their experience in a way that made them feel empowered at a time where we feel so much loss. When I stumbled upon an 7th Graders' commitment to honoring the lives of those lost to COVID and those who have helped the human race survive this pandemic, it became the perfect opportunity to fuse our study of printmaking and using art to send a message. The COVID Memorial Quilt is based off of the AIDS Memorial Quilt that this middle schooler's mom was an integral part of. We were lucky to be able to meet Madeleine Fugate (now an 8th grader) via zoom for an interview and connect with her and the story behind her project. She and her mom were thrilled to receive our printed fabric square submissions to the COVID Memorial Quilt 2020. When you look at the work our students have made and read the messages behind their designs it is truly inspiring to see just how connected they feel to this experience and to the members of their families and communities which they have honored. Below is a link to the COVID Memorial Quilt. You'll need to scroll down a bit to get to our squares, but they are impressive! The goal of the quilt is to eventually have panels on display in public spaces around the country.
