New DISTRICT GRADING POLICY
Grading Policy:
[On behalf of Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Timothy Gadson]
Dear Principals, Assistant Principals and Associate Superintendents,
I hope this message finds you well. I'm writing to provide important clarity on a recent change concerning grade assignments and our ongoing commitment to ensuring fairness in our grading system.
Change in Handling Missing Assignments: To address the challenge of missing grades, we have amended the IHA-R(1): Grading Systems – Grading Expectations. Specifically, in section g, we have mandated an update in our Infinite Campus system for all Traditional Schools. Effective immediately, any assignment flagged as 'Missing (M)' in the Gradebook will be calculated as a '50' instead of the previous '0'. This is a significant change, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we work to make our grading system more equitable.
Impact on Grade Calculations: This change means there might be a shift in the overall grades for some students. As a result, it's crucial to be aware that this could necessitate a re-posting of the 9-week grades. To swiftly identify students impacted by this change, we advise you to run the Missing Assignments Report.
Minimum Grade Policy: Another aspect to underline is that the lowest grade score any student should receive, under any circumstance, is now a '50'. This approach helps prevent a single zero from disproportionately lowering a student's overall grade, making grade recovery more attainable and fair. Please make time to communicate this with your teachers as soon as possible.
Research and Best Practices: The decision to assign a '50' instead of a '0' for missing grades is grounded in research that underscores the negative impact a zero can have on a student's motivation and overall performance. Here are some reasons:
· Motivation & Recovery: Assigning a zero can be demoralizing for students and makes grade recovery almost insurmountable, even if they improve in subsequent assignments.
· Mathematical Fairness: A zero has a disproportionate effect on the average. For instance, the average of 100 and 0 is 50, which doesn't reflect the true performance if the student had one excellent assignment and one missing.
· Promote Persistence: By assigning a '50', we give students an incentive to continue working and improving without feeling like one mistake or missed assignment defines their entire performance in a course.
It is our hope that these changes will bring about a more balanced, fair, and motivational grading environment for our students. We truly believe that this move is a step in the right direction toward fostering a culture that encourages growth and continuous learning.
We encourage open dialogue on this matter. Should you have any concerns, feedback, or require additional resources on this topic, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your dedication and hard work in ensuring the best for our students.
Warm Regards,
Timothy Gadson III, Ph.D.

COVID-19 UPDATES
APS students should use the electronic forms for self-reporting confirmed-positive COVID-19 cases.
Parents/guardians should use the student form to notify their school as soon as possible if their student receives a positive COVID-19 test.
Individuals exposed to someone with COVID-19 do not need to complete a self-report form. If the student or employee develops symptoms after exposure, the individual should take a COVID-19 test and stay home until their symptoms improve. If the individual tests positive, please return to this page to complete a self-report form.
For the 2023 – 2024 school year, APS will no longer publicly report total COVID-19 case counts. This is due to the end of COVID-19 surveillance testing in APS schools and buildings. APS will continue to internally monitor the number of COVID-19 cases and provide guidance as needed.
Historical cumulative case reports and vaccination rates can still be accessed on the Atlanta Public School district website.
