NEW! Message from the Principal

Well, Eagle Families, we've made it to our first long break of the year and we all deserve some time to rest and enjoy some fun with our family and friends! I am so grateful for my time here at Mesa Verde so far, for the students, the supportive families, and the amazing staff!

This week our staff participated in professional learning about suicide prevention, and while it's a heavy topic, I know our staff is better equipped to address this serious and important issue. We are working with our presenter to schedule a parent meeting in the near future.

This week we also focused on our facilities and parents were invited to come walk the campus to take a look at our facilities and identify immediate and long-term projects related to safety & security, maintenance, and modernization. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey to provide your feedback.

Scroll down to the Counselor's Corner and take a few minutes to read about the No Place for Hate Resolution of Respect activity that students participated in this week.

I hope to see you as we kick off our Field Clean-up tomorrow morning and I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Your Proud Principal,

NEW! Meet Our Staff

Each week we will be featuring a few of our dedicated staff members in a Meet Our Staff Section. This week we'd like to introduce you to Jenn Willette.

Jenn Willette - Acting ASES Site Supervisor, 4 years at MVMS

I grew up in PUSD, attending Westwood Elementary and Bernardo Heights Middle School before moving to Pennsylvania where I attended most of high school before returning to California and attending Rancho Bernardo High School as a senior. After graduating I went to Point Loma Nazarene and received a B.A. in Literature and went on to receive my credential as well.

While I knew I always wanted to be in education, I spent a lot of time wandering from district to district before finding myself at the ASES program. Something about working with students outside of the classroom setting struck me like lightning, and I knew that extended day learning was where my heart was. I've been working with the ASES program since 2016, but I moved over to the wonderful Mesa Verde in 2018. Our students are the absolute greatest!

When I'm not on campus, I spend time watching anime, playing all sorts of games (from video games to board games), reading novels recommended to me by students, having game nights over zoom with friends, or cuddling with my cat Louie.

We have some exciting things in the works for our fields, including renovation of our baseball diamonds, new grass, and leveling of the field - all thanks to our campus supervisor, Mr. Floyd! In order to complete these projects, we need to do some major clean-up. We are inviting members of our staff and community to help with this clean-up this Saturday (11/20) and Sunday (11/21) from 8am-12pm. Please come for an hour or all eight, bring shovels, gloves, clippers, mowers, edgers, rakes, etc.

According to Board Policy 6161.2, when materials are lost or so damaged that they are no longer usable, the student shall be immediately issued a replacement material. However, students or parents/guardians shall be responsible for reparation equal to the current replacement cost of the materials. PUSD Information Technology Department has provided a list of charges for various damage scenarios.

Chromebook/ Chromebook Accessories

Damaged/Lost Chromebook ($238.00)

Power Adapter/Charger ($30.00)

LCD Screen Replacement ($69.00)

LCD Top Cover ($69.00)

Palmrest/Keyboard/Touchpad replacement ($109.00)

Base Plate/Assembly ($69.00)

When a chromebook is damaged, students are responsible for the cost of the repair. Any students who have had damage to their chromebook this year have already had a charge added to their Destiny account. Next week, we will begin sending emails to families with a repair charge to provide information on how to pay for those repair costs.

Many of the damages we have seen so far this year could have been avoided. Please take a few minutes to speak with your child(ren) about the cost to repair these damages and remind them that their chromebook is theirs until it has to be "retired." We appreciate your support!

Running Late???

We hope all of our students are on time to school and ready to learn when the bell rings; however, we know that things can sometimes cause you to be delayed on your way to school. If your student is going to be late, please either call the attendance office or come in with your child to sign them in. Doing either of these will allow us to excuse the tardy. Thanks for your help!

Caring Connections Counseling

Did you know that the Caring Connections Center provides a FREE 90 minute "family conference" for all PUSD students TK-12 and their families? Check out the brochure for more information and contact details.

New! No Place for Hate Club

This week at Mesa Verde we took some time on Wednesday to hear about the No Place for Hate School Wide Program. No Place for Hate Club Members created a video to help explain the importance of celebrating our differences and promoting respect. In addition, to understanding how looking at bias and stereotypes are important in order to not allow hate to grow. The No Place for Hate Pledge, Resolution of Respect, was shared with all students. Students were invited to join in and virtually sign the pledge along with giving their thoughts and ideas on topics for future school wide activities.

Any students who would like to join the No Place for Hate Club and work on putting ideas into activities can come to our next meeting on Dec. 1st at 3:15 to 3:45 in room 332.

Volunteers must be fully-vaccinated and show proof of vaccination or show proof of a negative PCR COVID test within the 72 hours prior to volunteering. If you would like more information, please contact Natalie Reyes at (858) 538-5478 or nreyes@powayusd.com.

Library Volunteers

The Mesa Verde library is looking for volunteers to help in the library during the lunch periods (Mon/Tues/Thur/Fri 11:00 to 12:40 and Wednesdays 11:40 to 1:00) once we are permitted to have volunteers again. We need help assisting and supervising students during our busy lunch periods. Any special/personal items like retainers, glasses, jewelry, house keys, headphones, electronics, etc. are inside the office with Mrs. Rinehart. At the end of each month, any items that are left in the lost and found will be donated or discarded. Please encourage your student to pick up any lost items. As a reminder, please do your best to label all items to assist your student in locating them if lost.

Feeling Sick? Not Sure What To Do...

Call Mesa Verde's Health Tech at (858) 538-5478, ext. 3107. For more information, click here.

Checking Out Your Student Early

If your student needs to leave early from school, please send a note with your student. Notes should be given to the Attendance secretary in the Administration Office before school. Calling the school in advance, or sending a note, will prevent delays for you (such as trying to get your student while they are running on the lower field) and will help us to minimize interruptions to the classrooms. If you schedule a last minute appointment you may call the Attendance Hotline @ (858) 538-5692 to have an off campus pass sent to your student.

When writing a note please indicate the following:

  • Your student's first and last name
  • Reason for early departure
  • The time your student needs to leave school
  • Whether or not your student will return that day

Please meet your child at the Attendance desk to be signed out at the time of departure. Be prepared to show your identification when checking out your child. If your student returns to school after being picked up early, please have him/her check back in at the Attendance desk before heading to class.

Attendance Hotline

Call the Attendance Hotline at (858) 538-5692 if your child is absent from school.
