October Calendar

What a GREAT start to the school year!! Our kids are back and rolling right along with the new school year and all of the new learning. Teachers are pushing hard to establish their essential standards and are having great conversations about their daily instruction. We recently found out that we had the 7th most reading growth in the ENTIRE STATE OF IOWA. There is a positivity floating around Hawthorne that is motivating everyone within to do their very best. Thank you for your continued support!! Here is a look at what is in store for October.

Early Out - October 4

School will be dismissed due to Parent Teacher Conferences at 11:15. Please be sure to mark this on your calendar so your student is not left at school. Thank you!

Parent Teacher Conferences - October 4

Parent Teacher conferences will be held from 1:30 pm to 9:30 pm on October 4th. Please make sure you have set your time up with your student's teacher. You may contact your teacher or call the school.

No School - October 5

There will be no school on October 5th. Enjoy your long weekend.

SIAC (School Improvement Advisory Counsel) meeting - October 8th

For any parents that are interested in providing feedback to our KCSD school system, you are invited to join us for our first SIAC (School Improvement Advisory Counsel) meeting on Monday, October 8th from 6:00-8:00 at Central Office in the Torrence building.

Girl Scouts of America - October 9th

On Tuesday, October 9th, a representative from the Girl Scouts of America will be at Hawthorne Elementary from 5:30-6:30 in the gym. This is an informational meeting for any who are interested. Your students will receive flyers on Monday, October 8th with more information.

Walk To School Day

October 10th is our annual Walk to School Day sponsored by the United Way. We will meet in front of Keokuk High School on the corner of Washington St. and Middle Rd. promptly at 7:30. Bring your walking shoes and join us for a leisurely walk to Hawthorne!

McVeigh's Pumpkin Patch

All kindergarten classes will be going on a field trip to McVeigh's Pumpkin Patch during the month of October. Be sure to dress them appropriately for the weather!

Johnson Farms - October 11

All first grade classes will be traveling to Johnson Farms for an educational trip.

No School - October 16

There will be no school on October 16th. Teachers will be enjoying a day of learning in Burlington. Enjoy your day off!

Picture Re-Take - October 23rd

We will be having pictures re-taken on October 23rd. If your student was absent or you aren't happy with pictures, please have them re-take their pictures on this day.

Chatfield Park - October 22nd - October 25th

All kindergarten classes will be going on a field trip to Chatfield Park the week of October 22nd. Please be sure to dress them appropriately for the weather!!

Red Ribbon Week - October 23rd - October 31st

We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week with some dress up days. Red Ribbon Week is a nationally recognized week where student and teachers discuss the importance of being drug-free and drug awareness. The theme is "Life is your Journey. Travel drug-free," and the dress up days go as follows:

- 23rd- Backwards Day

- 24th- Travel Day

- 25th- Twin Day

- 26th- Spirit Day

- 29th- Crazy Hair Day

- 30th- Red Day

- 31st- Hawaiian Day

Spooktacular - October 26th

Our annual PTO Halloween fundraising carnival - the Spooktacular will be held Friday, October 26th 2017 from 5-7 pm at Hawthorne Elementary. During this event students and their families can participate in carnival games which will have candy/small toys as prizes at each game station and may come dressed in their Halloween costumes. Families can also enjoy hotdogs, maid-rites, chips, nachos, popcorn and drinks. Each game bracelet is $5 and can be used for all game stations, food items and drinks. The game bracelets will also be for sale the Parent/Teacher Conferences. This is always a fun event for all. We hope to see you there!!!

Halloween parties - October 30th

Our Halloween parties will be Tuesday, October 30th. As always, parents are invited to join their students for the fun. Parents are also encouraged to coordinate with our PTO to help with games, treats, and crafts. If you are interested in assisting with Halloween parties, please contact the PTO or contact the school.

Also, trick-or-treating is the night of October 30th. Enjoy and be safe!

Box Tops

Don't forget! If you have Box Tops collecting at your home please send them to Hawthorne with your student. Each box top is worth 10 cents that Hawthorne can use to support your Little Chief. The class that provides to most box tops with earn a popcorn party courtesy of the Hawthorne PTO!!
