MODULE SYNOPSIS
Leading corporations around the world are realising a new powerful source of competitive advantages. It is called supply chain management (SCM) and it includes all the integrated activities that bring products to market and create satisfied customers. SCM integrates topics from manufacturing operations, purchasing, transportation and physical distribution into an integrated system. Successful SCM coordinates all of these activities into a continuous process. It brings together and connects all relevant partners in the supply chain. In addition to the departments within the organisation, these partners include shipping companies, transportation companies, third party service provides as well as suppliers (domestic and international), among others.
Is within this context, that China’s increasing role and influence in the global export market makes it an essential factor in supply chains. As Low Cost Country (LCC) Procurement becomes the focus of supply chain managers seeking to cut costs, made-in-China products are aggressively replacing manufactured goods from developed countries and even from other LCCs. In fact, China finally surpassed Germany as the world’s largest exporter in 2009 after trailing behind it, the US and Japan in the recent past. In the future, China is only expected to improve its position in the global market as it upgrades its manufacturing export structure in favour of more technology-intensive products and aligns itself with internationally-accepted quality standards. While there are clear advantages to adding China into the supply chain, its inherent complexity needs to be carefully considered and addressed in order to mitigate risk and maximise gain.
