The Importance of Showing Up...
Attendance is fundamental to a child's success at school. When students are absent, they miss essential instruction, discussion, practices, formative and summative assessments that cannot be replicated or captured in a "homework packet". Chronic absence is defined as missing more than 10% of school for any reason, and can translate into course failure and drop-outs.
Truancy is more than just students skipping school; many absences are excused including family holidays, transportation issues, physical or mental illness. When chronic absences indicate other obstacles to regular attendance, West Central staff want to work in a partnership to identify these obstacles and support students and families so students can be successful. Sometimes it is as simple as your child's technology use. A phone or computer in a bedroom can upset sleep patterns and cause conflict in the mornings because of a lack of sleep.
As a way to improve educational success for students, West Central staff will continue gathering data about student attendance, researching the impact chronic absences, and developing strategies to improve life chances for all students.
Please expect staff to contact you about your students' absences at school. The approach and supports will depend on the situation. We are asking parents ensure students are in their classes everyday except for extenuating circumstances like illness or bereavement.
Stay tuned for more information as we develop our strategies to help parents help students make it to every class every day. Check the link before for more information about what you can to do make attendance a priority.
