October 21-27, 2018 is Principal Appreciation Week. Leadership at the building level is crucial in establishing the learning environment and providing what is best for students in a school. Great school leaders pay constant attention to the needs of students, staff, and the community. They invite, they inspire. They support families, students and staff in ways that lead to improvement and success. The positive impact our D91 Principals make each day can not be measured. They work tirelessly to create a nurturing and supportive school environment for our students and our staff. Please take a moment to join me in thanking your child’s principal for the work done each and every day on behalf of students in District 91.

This fall, our Board of Education will be sharing the strategic plan the members have created in collaboration with community stakeholders. Keep a look out for a community mailer that will detail our district's long and short range goals. If you are interested in serving as a school board member, our community would appreciate your service! For more information (including petition requirements and filing deadlines - visit the Will County Clerk's page (link provided below).

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on November 19 & 20; both evening and morning hours are available. This is a wonderful opportunity to ask any questions that you have and hear first-hand how your child is progressing.

Once again, we will offer online sign up using PTC Wizard. Please see the link below and contact our office with ANY questions or problems. We are happy to schedule a time for you if technology is not your thing.

This is the only formal conference that we will offer throughout the year, though I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher whenever you have questions or concerns.

Notes From the Nurse

I would like to remind everyone that it is cold and flu season. Please keep your child home if they are complaining of a sore throat, cough, have a fever, headache, or any other flu like symptom. Not all children with the flu will have a fever, so listen to your child’s complaints and keep them home when they do not feel well.

Preventing the spread of germs is important and keeping sick children separated from well children is a great way to prevent the spread of illness. Remind your child to wash their hands, not to share food or drinks and to keep from touching their face if at all possible. Coughing and sneezing into a tissue or the bend of their arm is also important. The staff at Milne Grove is working hard each day to keep the environment a healthy and safe place for your children. We all need to work together for prevention to be effective.

Family Reading Night

Join us on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH for Family Reading Night! Families will Choose their Own Adventure in our Enchanted Forest! It’s a night of fun and literacy in one. Save the date and watch for more information soon.

Book Notes

We have begun reading this year’s state Monarch Award nominated books. Students will vote for their favorite Monarch book in March. This winter we will be offering the Bluestem Bunch, a book club for third graders based on the state award program for grades 3-5.

Scholastic Book Fair

Our recent Scholastic Book Fair was a great success! We were able to get hundreds of books for the school libraries at no cost with the proceeds from your purchases! Many thanks also to the students who supported our change drive and helped us get even more books - Scholastic matched their donations with books for children in need.

Pumpkinpalooza / Food Drive

Pumkinpalooza had many great entries - check my webpage or Twitter for winners. Our FOOD DRIVE RUNS THRU NOV 14. Please continue to send in food items for Bags of Hope and the Lockport FISH pantry.

Physical Education Feats

Milne Family-

I am so happy I got to be your guest teacher for the past few months! We had so much fun and did so many amazing things. I loved getting to know each and every one of you! You taught me so much and filled my heart everyday. My wish is that you keep working hard in school and continue to be the caring and kind students whom you've shown me you are.

I look forward to seeing you in the halls and in your classrooms. Also, a big thanks to the amazing staff at Milne and Mrs. Draper for all their support and kindness. GO HORNETS!

Mrs. Draper is back in business! I cannot thank Mrs. Maloney, all of our staff and all of our amazing families for their kind words, support and love over the last few months! While it isn’t easy leaving my new baby girl, coming to work with our MG family has made the transition as smooth as possible.

As for the students, if you notice your child having any issues with the transition from Mrs. Maloney back to myself, please let me know. I know a change like this can be challenging for some students. Luckily for all of us, Mrs. Maloney will still be around, working around the district.

I cannot wait to get back in the swing of things with all of the students in PE!

  • Please continue to read with your child each night for 20 minutes. Additionally, your child should be reviewing vocabulary and spelling words.


  • Please be working with your student on fact fluency for addition, subtraction, and multiplication each night. Your child has been given flashcards to use for practice. Additionally, please help your child review the math vocabulary words.

  • You can use the Go Math link to review lessons at home and assist with concept questions during homework.


  • We are currently working on our force and motion unit.

Kindergarten is working hard with the letters, sounds, and sight words! We have learning the Jolly Phonics letter sounds and motions and are starting to applying the skills to read and write word .The Kindergarteners have also begun to blend 3 letter sounds to read words (cat, sip, ten). They have loved being “detectives” when searching for memory words in their library books and classroom books. You can help your child at home by working on the Word Bag each night, practice writing the sounds they hear in words and by reading to them everyday.

In Math we have been working on the comparing, recognizing and matching the numbers 0-10 to sets. In the coming weeks we will be going on to numbers and sets to 20. You can help your child at home with Math skills by practicing proper number formation, oral counting to 50, and comparing both sets and written numbers using our vocabulary words more and fewer.

The students have really enjoyed working with manipulatives in the classroom as well. In Science we will be exploring the signs of Fall Weather.

Early Learners Preschool

Upcoming Events:

Week of November 5 - The Early Learners will be introduced to the letter “Mm”. The theme of the week will be Music & Movement. They will also be introduced to the number six. The Early Learners will work on their Native American and pilgrim costumes for our fall program.

Week of November 12 – The Early Learners will be introduced to the letter “Jj”. The theme of the week will be Jam & Jelly Beans. They will also be introduced to the number seven and will work on special projects for Thanksgiving.

Week of November 19 – NO SCHOOL, Scheduled Home Visits & Thanksgiving

Week of November 26 - The Early Learners will be reviewing the letters A, C, F, I, J, L, M, V, and W. They will also be introduced to the number eight and will create special gifts for their families.

How Can I Improve my Child’s Speech?

Be a good speech model

When your child mispronounces a word, repeat the message correctly and emphasize the correct speech sound. (Child: Can we wide in the cow to Gwandma’s? Parent: Yes, we can ride in the car to Grandma’s.)

Talk about speech

Draw your child’s attention to how we make speech sounds. For example, if your child says “white for light”, you can tell your child that when we say the word “light”, you lift your tongue up behind your top teeth and flip it down to say ‘L”.

Connect speech sounds with print

Talk about the sounds that letters make and how your mouth helps you to make the sound. For example if working on the letter F, show your child that you bite your lip and blow air to make the sound for F. Point out words containing specific sounds while reading stories to your child.

Draw attention to speech errors

When your child’s speech error changes the meaning of the word draw their attention to their speech. For example if your child wants a key, but say tea, bring them a letter T or a cup of tea. Many children are unaware of their speech errors and the impact they have upon communication.

Correct speech errors

If your child can make the mispronounced sound correctly (e.g. child can say thumb instead of fum), then ask him/her to repeat the word. Don’t expect a child to correct himself if he can’t make the sound correctly!

November’s Topic: Mindfulness In our increasingly busy and multi-tasking lives, Milne Grove is currently turning to MINDFULNESS as a way to help students (and even teachers) navigate through the day in a calm, focused, and positive manner.


“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment,
and non-judgmentally.” -Jon Kabay-Zinn

At Milne Grove, we are taking opportunities and breaks to be more ”mindful”. Teachers and staff are utilizing various tools such as the Mindful Classrooms curriculum book and the GoNoodle website. These resources provide teachers and students with awareness in their body, breath, surroundings, feelings, and thoughts. Lessons and exercises incorporate mindful breathing, mindful stretching, mindful listening, and mindful seeing.


Research shows that with regular practice, Mindfulness can provide us with:

  • More patience

  • Better Focus and Productivity

  • Increased Compassion

  • Heightened Body Awareness

  • Less Stress and Anxiety

  • More Empathy and Perspective-Taking Skills

  • Better Emotion Regulation


Be a Good Role Model: Remember that your children learn from you! Check yourself… Do you feel the need to consistently check your phone as soon as you wake up, while you are eating, while you are interacting/communicating with your family? Do you feel the need to consistently check your personal or work email? Are you always multitasking? Do you feel that you habitually need to be doing something “productive” at home… Cleaning? Laundry? Dishes? Bills? Shopping? Etc.? TAKE A BREAK and BE MINDFUL to yourself and to your family members. Try and do one thing at a time. Sit at the table (TV off) and have dinner together as a family once in a while, have discussions with your children with no other distractions, play a game with your children, read to your children, go for a walk, notice your surroundings more and share positive observations with your children, and do other meaningful activities that allow you to appreciate and be in the present moment!

During the fall months, Milne Grove artists are currently working on the following projects:

All Milne Grove art students will progress into painting and the color wheel - with a focus on primary and secondary colors. Kindergarten’s first official painting will focus on the color, line, and shape found within a rainbow. Students will also learn to mix and blend the secondary colors and add white to their colors to create tints. First grade students will be working on a printmaking lesson which focused on positive and negative space and the fall color scheme - inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Nature Art, and the Fall season. Second grade will be starting a portrait landscape showing depth in inspiration of Sir Joshua Reynolds and his royal portraiture. Students will learn how to draw their face in correct size, shape, proportion and spacing. Third grade students have recently completed an outrageous dream bedroom design; students pushed their creativity by mapping the ultimate room with interesting layout, simple symbols, and much personal detail.

All students will also be completing artwork critiques - verbal, written, with peers, and using stickers/tokens that will motivate conversation about their artwork and the work of others.

Technology Class- Mrs. Lakics

Students have been working on Fall themed projects. Kindergarten and 1st grade are creating a pumpkin in Google Drawings using different shapes. 2nd Grade is creating a pumpkin in Google Slides and learning how to copy and paste images from one slide to another. They will then write about their pumpkin. 3rd grade is working on a Hallowing/Fall poem in Google Docs. CHRISTMAS PROGRAM (Grades K-5 & KG Chorus): T. Dec. 18 (10:30 am Change & 1:15 pm)

Parent/ Teacher Conferences: Please sign up through the web

“I Love Christmas” (a musical featuring songs of the season) will be presented Tuesday, December 18 at 10:30 am & 1:15 pm in the Kelvin Grove Gym (enter Door # 1) by all students in grades K-5 and the Kelvin Grove Chorus. The Kindergarten and First Grade will perform two songs on the stage to open the musical. Second through Fifth Graders and KG Chorus will present the entire musical in the gym on the floor in front of the stage. Auditioned Chorus members will be the cast. Morning Kindergarten will perform during the 10:30 am show and the afternoon kindergarten will perform during the 1:15 pm show. Students are to wear nice clothes for this performance.

Check the music web page: click on tabs for each grade for homework, music, class pictures and other information. Grades 2-3 will receive worksheets for homework, and will be using Quizlet, other web sites and youtube videos for students and families to learn, sing, and share music together. Students are to put graded worksheets in their music portfolio (3-ring binder) behind Chapter 2 Theory or Chapter 2 History and have homework completed by class time each week ready to be graded. Their portfolio should have five tab dividers labeled: 1- Notes; 2 – Theory; 3 – History; 4 – Classical Is Cool; 5 – Music; and save the portfolio (binder) through 8th grade.

3rd Grade Extra Recognition: Play and pass into advanced recorder status and/or through Joy tunes web program and register under Mrs. Randolph’s class. To have accomplishments posted on class recorder chart and/or web page. Advanced students will earn recorder award at the end of the year.

Recorder Club is FREE: By Appointment at Milne Grove. Students may earn stickers for music passed. Advanced students earn the opportunity to use music computers and pianos.


Parents are needed to help decorate and set-up for the Christmas Program. Please return the form to Mrs. Randolph if you can help! This year we are decorating the stage starting in November.
