Important Message from Mrs. Froning
I am looking forward to welcoming our students and staff back to school on Monday. Speaking for myself, these past few days have felt so very heavy when thinking about the Oxford tragedy and worrisome as I think about our Owls as they wondered why school was closed on Thursday and Friday. While school closures throw us for a loop as parents/caregivers, the explanation of a “snow day” is easily understood by our children. As you have had to explain the “why” for the most recent closure, it is important to remember that elementary students do not need all of the details of what happened and why we closed school for two days, yet. It may suffice in the short term to share that you received an email that schools were closed to make sure we are all safe and healthy. A simple message you can share with your Owls is that “school was closed so Mrs. Froning can be sure our school is even safer!” The answer is truthful. Then distract with a movie date, family game, lunch date, holiday decorating all while keeping the news off!
We understand that our Owls will return on Monday with different understandings of why we didn't have school; as well as of the tragic event in Oxford. Our staff will not initiate a conversations about the Oxford events but we will surround our children with love and reminders that Oakley Park is a safe place for learning. I think it is important for families to know that on Wednesday, very few students even mentioned what occurred in Oxford and went about their day like normal. As a staff, the most important thing we can do if a student brings up the tragedy is acknowledge that we are aware of the very sad event at Oxford High School and offer reassurance that we are safe here at Oakley Park. If a student seems to want to talk/share more, teachers will reach out to support staff as well as parents/caregivers.
As I shared in yesterday’s email, please have a conversation with your children that ALL threats, even those made in a joking manner, are investigated fully and taken seriously in this District. At the elementary level, it is most important that our children understand that words such as kill or other references to physically harming another person, as well as actions like shooting (pretending an item such a pencil, finger, etc is a gun/weapon) are not appropriate and/or acceptable. Actions such as these impact the feeling of safety for others. Also if you or your child sees or hears threats please contact your local police agency as well as me. You can also report them using the OK2SAY app or call (855) 565-2729 or text 652729.
Due to the unplanned closures and the events that unfolded this week, we have given grace to our teaching staff and moved back the due date of report cards. Staff members are coping with the Oxford tragedy, as well, and they need time to process. Many of our staff are both educators and parents. Navigating the emotions felt in both of those roles can be overwhelming at times. Thank you for your understanding and know that our teachers are looking forward to an in-depth conversation with you about your child during Parent/Teacher conferences, Thursday, December 9th. Report Cards will be available in Family Access after 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 16th.

Resources to use with your children following the Oxford Tragedy
Below are some helpful resources you can use as you have difficult conversations with your children.
Most importantly, reassure them that they are safe
- Oakley Park takes many steps to help keep students safe
- Identify a safe/trusted adult at school who keeps me/them safe
Make time to talk
- Allow your child’s questions to lead and guide your conversation
- Children’s questions are not always direct or chronological in nature
- Be patient
- Watch for clues they want to talk (lingering around you)
- It may be easier for your child (especially younger to communicate through drawing or imaginative play
Keep your explanations appropriate
- Keep it simple and brief
- Older students may be more specific in their questions. Answer but keep your responses brief and factual. Focus on efforts of school, community, and home to keep them safe. Separate fantasy/rumor from reality
- If you have both younger students and older students in your home, you may wish to have these conversations with them separately. The questions older students ask may be more information than you wish to have your younger student hear.
Review safety procedures (home and school)
- Ask, “how is your school safe?”
- Students may share or you can offer
- All doors are locked all the time
- Staff have a special badge to get in
- Staff use walkie-talkies, the phone, and p.a. to talk
- Lunch/playground monitors
- Cameras around the school
- Fire Department and Police (The Oakland County Sherriff Department provides GREAT support to Oakley! The Owls often see Deputy Krafft, our School Liaison officer around the building)
- Drills (Fire, Tornado, and Safety)
- What do you do in these drills?
- Emphasize the most important thing in all drills is to listen for directions from adults
Limit television and access to social media
- Think of radio in the car and TV in common areas
- Limit/avoid adult conversations about the incident(s) in front of your children
Maintain normal routines
- Kids like routine and know when it is different and off
- Attend evening activities
- Maintain sleep and meal routines
- Complete school work, read (always need to sneak this in :)
- Remind your children that if they see something, say something




Just a quick reminder that donations for our adopt-a-family are due to the school office or the address listed on the signup form by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, December 8. We are so appreciative of the extreme generosity shown once again this year. Two local families are going to feel the extra blessings this holiday season and we can all be proud of that. Please label the gifts with the family number and family member, also do your best to include a gift receipt. Gifts should be unwrapped, you can donate wrapping supplies as well if desired.

Also, Friday was the final deadline for Reflections submissions. If your student was planning to turn in an entry in person, please reach out to us and we will make arrangements to pick it up on Monday in the main office. Thank you to those who have entered, the kids have some beautiful ideas on how they can change the world!

Finally, our book fair hours have been updated, see them at the link here. The book fair will run as planned next week. There are still some openings for volunteers to help if you are available. We appreciate everyone who has already signed up.

Important COVID Reminders
Thank you for taking the necessary steps to help ensure the health and safety of our entire learning community.
If a student tests positive for COVID, they will be isolated for a minimum of 10 calendar days based on the recommendations from the OCHD. All families in that classroom will receive a letter regarding the positive case. The letter also reminds recipients to monitor their child's health closely and if he/she begins experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, stay home, consult your medical provider and get tested for COVID-19.

Parent/Teacher Sign Up Closes Tuesday, December 7th
Parent/Teacher Conference Information
Conference Sign Up is NOW open in Skyward Family Access! Online sign up closes on December 7th.
This year, parent/teacher conferences will be held virtually (via Zoom) on Thursday, December 9. On this date, students will be dismissed at 11:25am. After students are dismissed, teachers will be available for virtual conferences throughout the afternoon and evening until 8:00 p.m. Teachers will share a Zoom link with families prior to December 9.
Parents and guardians can sign-up for parent/teacher conferences using Skyward Family Access. Online sign up closes on December 7th.

Important Information Regarding Report Cards
Dear Elementary Families,
We are looking forward to sharing student progress in the coming weeks with you through our elementary report cards as well as conferences with our teachers. Last year, due to many logistical barriers involving reporting progress on students in virtual/remote settings as well as those transitioning back to in-person learning, we made some modifications to report cards and the reporting format. This year, however, with our students and staff back to in-person learning, we will once again return to our typical report card format. One exception that you may notice, though, is for our fourth and fifth grade students. At this point, we are asking teachers to continue to pause on assigning letter grades for science, social studies and mathematics. This is due in part to new curricular changes as well as the ongoing work with our elementary report card committee which is studying making recommendations in those areas this year. Thank you for your partnership in education! Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or the building principal for any additional questions regarding report cards this year.

The 23rd Annual MLK Day Celebration
“Together We’re Better”
Each school is asked to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration
on January 17th, 2022
Our Keynote Speaker is Rabbi Yarden Blumstein. Rabbi Yarden Blumstein is a teen mentor who creates awareness surrounding teen mental health and empowers teens to support one another in school and elsewhere. He directs UMatter, a division of Friendship Circle Michigan that focuses specifically on teens that are struggling with mental health challenges. Under the guidance of Rabbi Blumstein, UMatter operates on a peer-to-peer model of teens helping their peers overcome stigmas and other obstacles related to mental health.
Dr. MLK Jr. Express Yourself Contest
Who? You! The students of Walled Lake Schools.
What? Speech, essay, picture, poem, drawing, video, or any other way you
choose to express yourself.
How?
- Express the theme, “Together We’re Better!” in your own unique way. There
are lots of possibilities for creating a project. It can be a piece of writing,
music, art, or other visual that shows how you want to make a positive
change and/or impact in the world.
- Fill out an entry form (see below) and attach your entry to the form.
Why? We are looking for entries for our annual Walled Lake Schools MLK Day
Celebration on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Seeking Nominations for the "Alec Bender Friend of Diversity Award
The Walled Lake Schools is currently seeking nominations for the “Alec Bender
Friend of Diversity Award.” This award will honor individuals who are true friends
of multicultural diversity in our school district and community. The honor will be
bestowed upon the recipient(s) at the district-wide virtual Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day Celebration on January 17, 2022.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any staff member, student, parent, or community member.
WHO MAY NOMINATE?
Any person in the community may submit a nomination.

Walk into Walled Lake: Tuesday, December 7th
The Walled Lake Consolidated School District (WLCSD) is excited to host “Walk into Walled Lake”, an upcoming series of informational community employment sessions. These informational sessions will allow members of the community to learn more about the District and how they can support the schools by filling needed positions within the schools.
Attendees will then have the opportunity to apply and participate in walk-in job interviews for needed positions such as substitute teachers, paraeducators, before and after school care, food service employees, custodians, and transportation.
Candidates interested in earning a competitive wage, while serving their community are invited to Walk into Walled Lake from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the District’s Educational Services Center (850 Ladd Road, Building D, Walled Lake, 48390) on the following dates:
- Tuesday, December 7
Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with District representatives, learn more information specific to their job interest, and will be able to complete the application process on-site.

UPDATED: Mask Reminder
Due to this OCHD mandate, the following protocols are required:
- Masks are required in all of our schools and facilities.
- Masks are required on our buses.
- Masks are not required outside (ex. recess).
- Masks are not required while eating or drinking.
- Mask Breaks: Please note that teachers will take their classes outside for periodic mask breaks throughout the school day.
Water Bottles: Please remember to send your child to school with a reusable, plastic water bottle. Our drinking fountains are closed. Refilling stations are still open.
