Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 26, Issue 10, October 9, 2018
From the PFC President
Since becoming a parent, I have learned that kids will find new and amazing ways to boggle your mind every day. For instance, the things kids can remember are astounding. I think I have told our daughters about eleventy bazillion times to pick their clothes up off the bathroom floor and turn the light off in the room when they are done getting ready in the morning. And, if you have kids like ours, you know exactly how often they remember to do this simple chore as they walk out of the bathroom.
Yet what they do remember is equally amazing. Like Halloween. They might not remember the exact date, but they remember everything about Halloween whenever you get them anywhere close to the section with all the candy, costumes and black and orange everything at Target. And they probably remember to remind you about the costume they want (and this may change a minimum of every day over the next few weeks) and that the annual Thornhill Halloween Parade is coming up on October 31. I know, the parade is still three weeks away, but there are a few guidelines for costumes that it is asked we all keep in mind:
--No full facial masks (those always end up being too hot, anyway).
--No weapons (I love nunchucks as much as anyone else, but let's leave those at home).
--No blood (kids end up with enough of scrapes and scratches and the real thing).
Have a good week, and good luck with the costumes.
It’s Almost Time for the Fall Sweep!
Saturday, October 20, 9am-12pm
Bring your favorite tools and people and come participate in Thornhill's Fall Sweep! People of all ages are welcome to join in the fall fun to help spiffy up our school grounds and come together as a community. Whether you can come for one or three hours, please choose your own adventure on this signup link. We look forward to seeing you all!
Our Fall Sweep also qualifies Thornhill to earn tickets to Disneyland for use at our annual Auction/Gala. If we get 75 or more participants of all ages, we can earn up to 20 Park Hopper tickets to auction off in March!
It’s Also Almost Time for the Walkathon!!
Saturday, November 3, 10am-4pm
The Walkathon is coming! Our theme this year is the Thunderbird Turkey Trot.
Pledge information and volunteer opportunities will be announced soon via Konstella, this newsletter, and on the website. In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to help out, please contact our Walkathon Chair, Carmen Childs, at email@example.com.
Back to School Donation Drive Extended One More Week!
Thornhill families, we need your help! We are still $20,000 shy of our goal. If you haven’t yet donated, now is the time! The PFC budget is crucial to funding our teachers’ aides, PE Coach, librarian, art teacher, music instruction, computers, supplies and more. Without your support, we are not able to provide these for our students. Please contribute at whatever level works for your budget. Donations of any amount help us reach our goal. See the chart for the distribution of donation amounts—as you can see below, Thornhill families have donated at all levels.
Some classes are really setting the pace for participation! Ms. Contreras' class leads with 83%, followed by Ms. Forbes' class with 79% and Ms. Steimle's class with 77%! Amazing!
To the families who have already donated, thank you so much! Your support has been tremendous! Thornhill hats were sent home with your children this week. (If you didn’t get yours, email firstname.lastname@example.org).

Reducing Waste at the Walkathon
The Sustainability Team is on a mission to reduce waste at Thornhill events, and we’re starting with some specific requests ahead of the Walkathon on Saturday, November 3.
Prizes: Instead of purchasing new dollar store toys for the walkathon give-aways, we would like to collect from your toy graveyard and re-distribute to our superstar walkers at the event. We welcome all donations, please bring them to the bin that will be in the school lobby October 2-30.
Utensils: We are collecting old cutlery that will find its forever home servicing the hungry mouths at Thornhill events, including the Walkathon. Please bring your second-string cutlery to the bin labeled "silverware donations" that will be in the school lobby October 2-30.
Thank you from the Sustainability Team!
