Principal's Report
I hope all is well. We have finished our first full week of school and our students continue to shine! They have shown great perseverance as we continue to get used to being back in school.
It was great to see so many of our families at our grade level Curriculum Nights earlier this week. We believe partnership with our parents and families is an essential key to your child's success in school and we appreciate you helping to build strong relationships and attend these important meetings.
Please be sure to read through all of the information in our weekly newsletter as it is our main form of communication with our families. We don't want you to miss out on any important details or happenings. We appreciate your continued cooperation and support.
Together We Will Shine!

Student Health Screener
Keeping our schools open for face-to-face learning will require everyone's help in mitigating the spread of the virus. Students/families are asked to self-screen each day before school, using the Chippewa Valley Student Self-Screening Questions found below. Staff and students must stay home if feeling ill or have symptoms that are COVID-19 related.
If your child will be absent, you must call our attendance line at 586.723.6899. This line is open 24/7 so please call as soon as you know your child will not be in school but always prior to the start of the school day on which they will be absent. When leaving a message, please state student's name grade, teacher and reason for absence. If your child is ill, you must give the symptoms your child is experiencing and a diagnosis, if confirmed by a physician.
Parking Lot Reminders
We would like to remind everyone just how important it is to follow the parking lot safety procedures. For the safety of your child and the entire Shawnee community, please follow the parking lot procedures outlined below.
- Use the designated drop-off lane in the front of the school. Do not drop your children off on the parking lot side of the crosswalk or park on the crosswalk.
- When you enter the parent drop-off lane, pull all the way forward as traffic allows. Please do not stop at a certain spot to let your child off closer to their door. Doing this backs up the traffic.
- Please have your child ready to get out of the car. This means backpack and all materials ready. If kids are ready to get out, it will keep the line flowing.
- Do not park or leave your car unattended in the drop-off lane. Please do not sit in your car in the drop-off lane waiting to drop-off or pick-up students. The drop-off lane should be continuously moving.
- If you are not using the drop-off lane, you may park and walk your child across the crosswalk and into the building. Do not drop your children off and let them navigate through the parking lot alone. Likewise, children should not be leaving school alone and walking in the parking lot without an adult to try to find their ride.
- Please use the crosswalk no matter where you park or which door your child enters.
- Drive slowly and safely in the parking lot and drop-off lane. There will be people crossing at the painted crosswalks.
- Reserve the handicap parking spaces for the people that have permits. This is not a safe or legal place to make a quick pick-up / drop-off.
- Follow the flow of traffic and honor the one way directions.
Please be patient with each other and always remember you are the #1 role model for your children; they learn by watching us! We want to ensure that every child makes it to and from school safely. We can only accomplish this important task with your help and support.

If you do not have access to fill out the application online, paper copies will be available in school offices. Should you need further assistance, please contact the Food & Nutrition Department at (586) 723-2110.
Shawnee Hot Lunch Order Form
This year, parents will continue to order hot lunch in advance for their children using our Shawnee Lunch Form. Therefore, teachers no longer take lunch count in class. The link below or "Order Lunches Here" button will lead you to a form so you can make lunch choices for your student. Simply enter your child’s name, and select their grade and teacher. Then, choose the dates and lunch options your child would like to order.
The link is live now! You may order and make changes anytime between now and 8:00 AM on the day before you are requesting lunch. After that, you will not be able to order for the next day as our totals will be submitted.
Please be sure to check back often as menu changes can occur. Click here for further information sent from the district regarding lunch supply challenges that are impacting our menus.
Students can order Lunch Plus / Doubles for lunch. Hot lunch still remains free but the cost of doubles will be $1.50. Students will need to preorder doubles just as they do for hot lunch. Lunch Plus / Doubles will be an option on our lunch form. Please be sure your child has money on their lunch account. You can deposit money to your child's account using the following link: Send Money to School.
We are excited to offer this easy lunch ordering opportunity. Please be sure to think and plan ahead and order on time so we can ensure we have lunches for all students who need them. Thank you for your help and cooperation.
- Lunch orders must be placed by 8:00 AM the day before you are requesting lunch.

We will continue to provide updates as we have them. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have worked through this situation.
Help Wanted!
Please note, we are shuffling crossing guards to try to cover the most critical posts during this shortage, which may mean there are posts that are vacant. Please be extra cautious and careful when driving around our schools and adjacent neighborhoods. We appreciate your help and support in keeping our students safe.

Please arrange a meeting spot with your child so they know where to meet you upon exiting the building. We ask that parents stand away from the doors and follow all social distancing guidelines.
Late Arrivals / Early Dismissals & Materials Drop-Off
- If a student arrives to school late, parents will bring their student to the front door, ring the buzzer, state the students’ name(s) and the students will be buzzed into the school and sent to class. Parents will not be permitted to enter the building.
- The reverse will occur for early dismissals. Parents will ring the buzzer and state the students' name(s). The parent’s ID will be verified, the student will be called for and sent out to the parent.
- Tables with grade level bins will be set up in the main entrance vestibule daily for materials that need to be dropped off. Parents can label, drop items off and leave it in the appropriate grade level bin. Office staff will check the tables and deliver items to the necessary places.
- Please make every effort to send your children with what they will need at school for the day.
