- We're Hiring!
From Mrs. Barry:
Even though it's only January, as a school district and campus, we are already planning for the 2021-22 school year. Though there are still many unknowns about what will be happening in the upcoming months, one thing is for certain - Meadow Wood is GROWING! Though we haven't received our final projections yet, we anticipate adding additional classrooms in Kinder and Third Grade in the next year.
We are currently in the process of accepting applications for our Pre-Kinder lottery. We will also be starting Kinder registration very soon. Be on the lookout for information regarding our Kinder Round-Up Meeting, and be sure to share it with your neighbors who don't have Eagles in our nest yet.
Also happening now are Fifth Grade Transition meetings. Our Fifth Graders are visiting with Spring Forest and other Choice Campuses and working on making their selections for electives. In March, we will have a "Middle School 101" meeting where parents and students can ask any and all questions they have about middle school, utilizing "experts" - parents and students who are already in middle school!
Though we are still not open for visitors, if you have neighbors who are interested in or have questions about MWE, please have them reach out to me (lynne.barry@springbranchisd.com or 713-251-6210). I would love to share information about our incredible school and community!
As always, thank you for your support! Together, we are Growing Great Minds at MWE!

Welcome, Ms. Moen!
Hello Meadow Wood Elementary! My name is Anastasia Moen, and I will be the new Student Support Manager from Communities in School on campus! I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Education from Baylor University and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Houston. I pursued these degrees because I have a passion for working with children and families, while offering behavioral and emotional support to students. I am so excited to meet you all and get to know you through the rest of this school year!
Some fun things about me:
• I have a cute cat named Silky
• I love ballet and jazz dance
• I enjoy knitting and crocheting
• I also have a niece that just turned 2 years old
• Something odd about me, I am allergic to artificial red food coloring.
Valentine's Day 2021 - MWE Plans and Procedures
1. MWE will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 12, 2021.
2. Students WILL be allowed to bring individual valentines to school. However, valentines will
need to be brought to school on or before February 5, 2021 in order to quarantine.
3. Valentines can have candy, toys, etc., as long as they are individually wrapped.
4. MWE will provide each student with a bag for their valentines. No outside bags/boxes will be
allowed.
5. Teachers will distribute the valentines into individual student bags. These bags will be sent
home, and students can open them at home.
6. Each grade level will plan specific activities to celebrate the day. There will be no
formal/scheduled parties.
Transportation Safety Reminders
Our number one priority here at Meadow Wood is the safety of our students. With that in mind, we have a few reminders that we really need your help and compliance with.
1) PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE FRONT LOT TO PICK UP WALKERS AND PLEASE DO NOT PARK ALONG MEMORIAL GREEN DR. At afternoon dismissal, there are routinely too many cars in the front parking lot and along the roadside of Memorial Green. Our busses are reporting difficulty in getting to the bus circle due to the crowded roadway. Also, we have teachers that travel to other campuses and back and have NO PARKING when they return to campus. If your student is a walker, please walk to campus and meet your student. If you are coming by car, PLEASE get a car tag from the front desk and go through the car rider line.
2) Additionally, it is important for us to correctly identify who is picking up your students. We need you to please carry your green or yellow pick-up card if your Pre-K, Kinder, or 1st Grade student is a Memorial or Bateswood Walker. We also ask that you wear a mask when on campus grounds. We appreciate your attentiveness to this matter.
Thank you,
Mrs. Barry & Ms. Vendetti
Pre-Kinder Lottery
The lottery is for children who live in the home campus attendance area, with priority given to those who have an older sibling attending on the campus for the 2021-2022 school year. After drawing for allotted spaces, any remaining children will be placed on a waiting list.
If selected, parents will come to the home campus to preregister their children anytime between February 1st and February 26th. Parents will be asked to pay the registration fee of $50 at the time of sign up. Parents will officially register their child at MWE beginning April 1st. Tuition is collected on the first of each month in nine installments. Fees are waived for students who are eligible through State criteria.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Snelling at 713-251-6204 or susan.snelling@springbranchisd.com.
Please share this information with your neighbors who do not have Eagles in our nest yet!
Chick-fil-A Spirit Night-Wednesday, January 27th 3:00-8:00pm
The Counselor's Corner
Responsibility
This month we are talking about Responsibility! The dictionary talks about Responsibility in a few ways: duty, accountability, and the independence to make decisions. We are using a slightly different definition at school:
Responsibility: to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world.
Every day we make choices and take actions. Being responsible means we know how those choices impact all people and things involved! Sometimes we get to choose what we are responsible for, sometimes we earn new privileges through consistent and healthy choices, and sometimes we are responsible for things simply because we are a part of a community (and we all have to do our part!). We will spend time talking about what it means to be responsible for our classroom. We will practice self-control and develop helpful practices. We will think about people with a lot of responsibility like Michael Jordan and Eleanor Roosevelt. Together, we can take responsibility for a more kind, generous world!
Conversation Starters:
•You really want a new game, but you need a new pair of shoes. How do you decide between wants and needs so that you can spend your money responsibly? Talk about wants and needs in your life and how you’ve learned to tell the difference!
•What are the responsibilities you have at home? How do people know what they are responsible for? Which responsibilities are you really good at?
•What’s something that you want for our home? Would getting this thing demonstrate responsibility with our time, money, or energy? If so, how might we earn this special something by showing responsibility?
Questions You Could Ask:
•Why is it important to consider other people when you’re making your decisions
•Who is the most responsible person you know? What makes them responsible?
•What are some things that might get in the way of showing responsibility? What are some things that might help us practice responsibility?
•What does responsibility feel like to each person in your family?
Exams for Acceleration and Credit By Exam
SBISD offers both Exams for Acceleration and Credit by Exam.
Exams for Acceleration (EA) offer students in grades 1-8 the opportunity to advance one grade level by scoring 80% or higher in each of the four required subject areas. Students desiring to advance one grade level will need the signature of their parent/guardian as well as the building principal or designee. Student performance data must be included with the application. Testing is free for all enrolled SBISD students. Kindergarten students are not eligible for testing until the summer prior to the first grade year.
Courses required for acceleration:
Grade Level Math
Grade Level Social Studies
Grade Level Science
Grade Level Language Arts
Study Guides for EA and CBE assessments may be found at the following link. Some exams require reading of novels (ELA), participation logs (PE), or portfolios (Art); those requirements are listed in the study guides. https://highschool.utexas.edu/cbe_study_guides
Credit by Exam (CBE) offers students the opportunity to gain course credit in the subject area(s) being tested. Students who wish to take a Languages Other Than English (LOTE) exam must have completed 7th Grade. CBEs may be taken with or without prior instruction, and testing is free for all enrolled SBISD students. Fall and Spring exams are administered at the student's home campus; summer exams are administered at a location to be announced.
High School courses are tested by semester and most have two semesters. When high school course credit is earned through Credit by Exam, the course and the score of the test are posted to the student’s transcript. However, the score will not impact the student’s Grade Point Average.
For more information, see flyer below or contact Ms. Luberger at lynne.luberger@springbranchsd.com.
