Symbolism
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Throughtout the play Othello, the handkerchief was very symbolic.The handkerchief symbolized different things to different characters.
Signifigance to Other Characters
Othello
Othello claims that his mother used it to keep his father faithful to her, so, to him, the handkerchief represents marital fidelity.
Iago
The importance of the handkerchief from Iagos point of view is different. Iago manipulates the handkerchief so that Othello comes to see it as a symbol of Desdemona's faith and chastity,
Desdemona
Since the handkerchief is Othellos first gift to Desedemona she treasures it as a symbol of his love to her. She always has it with her, "to kiss and talk to." Act III Scene iii
