Stuck in the Mud
What to do when your reader is stuck...
Strategies for an unknown word
Here are a few strategies we employ in the classroom-
- Encourage your child to look at the picture for cues
Books for beginning readers often have illustrations that support the text. Students are encouraged to use illustrations, please DO NOT cover them up.
-Sound/Stretch out the word
Encourage your child to produce the sounds for each letter or look for parts they know.
-Skip it
Ask your child to skip over the word and continue with the rest of the sentence. After completing the sentence have your child go back and see if they can figure out what would make sense.
-Give them the word
Beginning to read is CHALLENGING! As teachers, we do not want your child to reach frustrational level with their at home reading practice. If you have tried a strategy or two from above and your child is reaching a frustrational level, give them the word and move on.
