FACT OR FICTION?

Tip of the Week
Factor in intervention, safety for LRE discipline decisions
When addressing challenging behavior, and before doling out discipline, schools should consider interventions and factor in the effects of student behavior on the classroom environment.
Kelly Vaillancourt Strobach, policy and advocacy director for the National Association of School Psychologists, has recommended that schools take a trauma-informed, rather than punitive, approach to discipline to support students with challenging behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said that, by focusing on prevention and intervention, schools can better support students who struggle emotionally and behaviorally.
