Burleson High School Athletics
Lady Elk Basketball
When Katie Arguello scored off a backdoor cut with 1:15 to play Tuesday night it seemed like Burleson might just pull off an upset of Crowley.
But down the stretch, the Lady Elks couldn’t make the plays when needed as Crowley collected a 44-42 District 5-5A win at Burleson.
Crowley’s Cameron Collier, whose three-pointer gave the Lady Eagles (20-8, 7-1) a 42-38 lead, hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to seal the game.
“I thought we cleaned some things up that had been hurting us,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “If we can do those things on a consistent basis we can compete in district.”
Trailing 26-15 at halftime, the Lady Elks outscored Crowley, 27-18, in the second half to make things interesting.
Caitlyn Kirkham led Burleson (8-18, 1-7) with 11 points.
The Lady Elks play at Granbury Friday and Tuesday at Mansfield Legacy.
Things didn’t go well for the Lady Elks Friday night at Everman as Burleson fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 50-22, to end the first half of district play.
Thanks to three three-pointers, Everman was able to build a 27-12 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Elks, 18-4, in the first quarter.
“I think all of their three-pointers were bank shots,” Enis said. “We went 10 for 24 from the free-throw line and that killed us.”
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs outscored Burleson, 23-10, to finish out the game.
Johnson led Burleson in scoring with 11 points.
Elk Basketball
Sam Martin and Brennan Zeiner made big plays down the stretch for Burleson Tuesday night as the Elks registered their second consecutive District 5-5A win with a 56-51 victory at home over Crowley.
Zeiner, who finished with 15 points, hit consecutive shots in the lane to give the Elks a 46-40 lead with 2:16 to play.
Martin scored Burleson’s final eight points of the game to finish with a team-high 18 points. Martin converted a shot from the field and made 6-of-8 free throws to put the game away.
After falling behind, 13-9, through one quarter of play, Burleson outscored Crowley, 47-38, in the last three quarters.
The Elks (6-13, 2-4) finish the first half of district play at Granbury Friday and play at Mansfield Legacy Tuesday.
For a while Friday night, it looked like the Elks might remain winless in district play.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Burleson trailed at Everman, 39-38, then the Elks went on a 17-3 run to register their first district victory with a 55-42 win.
“We played very good as a team and rebounded like their life was on the line,” Burleson coach Joey Martin said. “The kids stuck to the game plan and got the win.”
Burleson’s trio of Sam Martin, Josh Pierre, and McFail each hit double-figure scoring in the win. Sam Martin scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. Pierre finished with 16 points and McFail scored 11 points.
