Congratulations to the 15 FBLA members who competed in various FBLA Competitive tests this week. We are looking forward to competing at the Regional level on March 12th, where 25 total students will be competing.
The Introduction to Cybersecurity and the Cybersecurity Software Operations classes had the honor of hosting a guest lecturer from the National Security Agency, Dr. Rita Doerr. Dr. Doerr has been with the NSA for 33 years in many cybersecurity positions. She is currently assigned to the National Cryptologic School's College of Cyber as a Cyber Instructor. She is a former cybersecurity professor at the US Naval Academy and University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Doerr shared her (unclassified) cybersecurity adventures with our students and discussed the future of cybersecurity.
Congratulations to Bethanne Maynard, Elizabeth Joo, and Caroline Burt who are actively competing in the Girls Go CyberStart competition! All three girls are on track to move forward to the next round!

Our Swim teams placed second at the Region 5C Swim Championships last week. The boy's team finished second to Thomas Jefferson, and the girl's team finished second to Briar Woods. We are competing at the State Championship meet on Friday, February 21, at George Mason.

Riverside Choir is proud to announce that for the first time in Riverside History, we will have delegates to All-State Chorus. Lexie Grandis, (12) and Cassie Atkinson, (12), will represent Riverside on April 25th in Richmond, VA alongside approximately 350 students in the All-State Music Conference. Lexie and Cassie were selected after two rounds of auditioning out of over 400 LCPS students. Alexander Footen was also selected as an Alternate selection and may also be joining them. Way to go Choir Students, and congratulations on making Riverside History!

Humanity First’s Valentine’s Day carnation sale fundraiser was a HUGE success! The club raised over $530, all of which will be donated to Water for Life, a global initiative to bring water wells to developing countries. Thank you to all the parents and students who purchased carnations, and special thanks to Maya Asher and Bryn Mazzocco for leading this year’s efforts.

Can you spare a few minutes to improve our school?
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) will release the LCPS Annual Parent and Family Survey on Tuesday, Feb.18.
The online survey will be delivered to parents in a link. The link will be distributed midday via text message and email. Parents will receive one message for each grade level—elementary, middle or high—in which they have a student enrolled.
The survey asks for feedback about the learning environment in your child’s school to help staff in future planning. All survey responses are anonymous. The survey will be open through Friday, March 6.

- February 19 Deadline for current 9th-11th grade students to apply to programs at Advanced AET or Monroe Advanced Technical Academy
Mid-March Course request verification letters will be sent to parents/guardians. We plan to
send these letters electronically and request ‘Permission Click’ for approval. If upon
reviewing your student’s course requests you would like to discuss changes, you can
contact your student’s school counselor.
June 1 Last day to request course request changes for 2020-21 school year
- · Last day to submit Early Release request forms
- · Last day to submit all requirements for NVCC Dual Enrollment Courses; students will be placed in the Academic level if requirements are not met by this date.
Other items to keep in mind…
- ● Please visit our Riverside HS School Counseling website for further information related to scheduling. You will find samples of forms we use, a list of course offerings, and the LCPS Program of Studies.
● The Program of Studies is a great resource to review course descriptions as well as
graduation requirements. As of this date, only the 2019-2020 edition is available. The
2020-2021 Program of Studies is expected to be posted soon.
● Teacher recommendations are provided for core subjects by the current teachers, and will be a key factor in determining placement. If a student requests a course other than what has
been recommended by a teacher, a discussion with the school counselor will be required,
and we strongly encourage you to discuss the recommendation with the teacher if requesting
a course of a higher level (requesting Honors but recommended for Academic). Teachers
may also amend recommendations later in the year based on student performance.
● Do you know about AP Potential? The CollegeBoard has developed a tool for predicting the
likelihood of student success in Advanced Placement courses based on the student’s
PSAT/SAT score. If your student has taken any PSAT or SAT, you can access the online
score report in CollegeBoard and click on the tab at the top labeled AP Potential.
● Through the end of February, school counselors will be meeting with every individual
student in grades 9, 10, and 11, in addition to supporting other needs. If further discussion is
needed to make a final decision on course selections after the verification letter has been
received in mid-March, please contact your school counselor.
● June 1, 2020 will be the last day to request changes to courses for the 2020-2021 school
year. It is also the last day to submit Early Release requests and NVCC Dual Enrollment
requirements.
We look forward to collaborating with you and your student during the 2020-2021 course
selection process, and ensuring her/his needs are supported in pursuit of academic and career goals.
Mr. Luke Mason
Director of School Counseling
