April Assessments

One Crazy Month

A Note from Mr. Nakano

Welcome back from Spring Break! This month of April is sure to be crazy, as we start our Smarter Balanced assessments at Canyon View. The students will start next week, with a couple of fun events in between the two weeks of testing.

Expect limited homework throughout the month to allow students the opportunity to rest prior to each testing session.

As a result, volunteering has been cancelled for this month, due to all of our activities. We are so thankful for all of your help this year, as it has helped build our classroom community and the abilities of our students.

Smarter Balanced Tests

Prior to Spring Break, we have been taking the Smarter Balanced Practice Tests to learn the special tools that are involved with the computer-based assessments. You can click on the blue link to retake the practice tests too or to just play around and familiarize yourself with the tools.

Even if they bring in their own device, the students will be using Canyon View issued Chromebooks in class to take these assessments. Below are the dates of our testing, including our Math Placement Test at the end of the month.

Smarter Balanced Tests - English Language Arts

Some of the tools the students have practiced using, as they use it with Google Docs, are the highlighter and strikeout features.

6th Grade Panoramic Picture

Thursday, April 14th, 8am

12025 Yale Court

Irvine, CA

On this day, we will be taking our 6th grade panoramic picture at the beginning of the day. Students are encouraged to wear their blue "16" 6th grade shirt for the picture. Afterwards, we will be taking the final part of the English Language Arts Smarter Balanced assessment.

Look for a pink envelope to come home with purchase instructions should you want a copy of the picture.

Sierra Vista Middle School Visitation

Friday, April 15th, 7:45am

2 Liberty

Irvine, CA

It is hard to believe that the end of the year is already here. Your 6th graders will soon be 7th graders and to help them prepare for the transition to middle school, we will be taking a trip to Sierra Vista Middle School on April 15. Jeffrey Trail does not have a similar visitation, so it will be a great experience for everyone.

We are asking that you and your family make arrangements to have your child at Sierra Vista Middle School at 8:00 AM in the morning.

We encourage you to make carpool arrangements to alleviate parking lot congestion, as well as help out families who are unable to make the trip in the morning.

We want to ensure that all students are able to participate in this great opportunity so, please let us know if your child is unable to find a ride to Sierra Vista. We will make arrangements so all students can participate.

Smarter Balanced Tests - Mathematics

Geometry is the final unit we will be teaching this year. Unfortunately, it occurs after the two math tests. That's why we have been exposing them to some of the formulas and concepts throughout the year and sent home the pink practice packet.

We are wrapping up unit 4 on Friday and will adjust our focus primarily on geometry for the week after.

Students are also encouraged to use their STAR Math activities chart for reference on skills they can focus on for practice.

Middle School Math Placement Tests

All information that we receive about the middle school math placement tests are referenced by the website on IUSD.

We are given no information regarding the length of test, how many questions, the breakdown, or even given practice questions. Our best recommendation is to review the Springboard textbook for best practice.
