The J-Hawk Experience
Info you need to know for week of October 9-13!
Messsage from the principal
It is an exciting opportunity for us to share our culture and who we are as a school. Later next summer, we will then have students and staff from UHS who will make a trip to Germany to see them as well. These are great chances for us to develop relationships and build connections with people from around the world. Thank you to Frau Lubbers, our German teacher, for her work in preparing for these opportunities.
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

ACE Mentor Program
Founded in 1994, the ACE name stands for Architecture, Construction and Engineering. The program stands for mentoring high school students and inspiring them to pursue careers in design and construction. It is now the construction industry’s most respected high school mentoring program with tens of thousands of students and growing.
Imagine designing a new Nolen Plaza or a new cafe and printing center, a new Principal Riverwalk facility or a stadium while you are still in high school. In your dreams?...Not anymore. Thanks to the ACE (Architect, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program hundreds of high school students are designing real life projects under the direction of the local top design, engineering and construction individuals.
Led by mentors. Driven by you. As a participant, you will join a team of other students led by adult mentors who are practicing industry professionals. ACE is not about merely describing specific professions. It is about immersing you in the actual profession:
Architects
Interior Designers
Landscape Architects
Mechanical Engineers
Structural Engineers
Electrical Engineers
Environmental Engineers
Civil Engineers
Construction Managers
College and University Representatives
What to expect : You will visit professional offices, job sites and other relevant locations. You will discuss the same issues, and perform the same tasks, as if you worked in the industry. ACE gives you a practical hands on view of the everyday reality of a job.
Opportunities abound: ACE is your chance to learn about different construction industry careers and discover which one might be right for you. It is also a great way to connect with other students who share your passions.
Become an ACE student: If you are ready to take the first step, we are ready to help. Start by visiting www.acementor.org for more information and to apply.
The ACE Mentor Program is open to any high school student who has the curiosity and drive to learn about a career in design and construction. Already, more than 50,000 students have enjoyed the exciting projects, informative field trips and other engaging activities that make up the ACE experience.

UHS to host PSAT - October 14
Things you should know about the PSAT:
*It is a practice test for the SAT, which is a standardized test for college admittance. The PSAT is also the entrance exam for the National Merit Scholarship program. Juniors who score in the top 3% nationally (approximately) are entered into the National Merit competition. This is one of the highest academic honors a student may receive.
This is a link for more information: National Merit Scholarship Program
*The SAT is a different test than the ACT. The majority of our students take the ACT instead of the SAT. Both are standardized exams that 4-year colleges and universities require for admittance. Here is a link that describes the differences between the two tests: ACT vs. SAT Comparison
How to register: To register, students should bring $27 cash or check (payable to UHS) to Mrs. Gibson in the UHS Counseling Office. Registration opened on September 12. Please register soon. Space is limited. If you have questions concerning the PSAT, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor at UHS.
