Glenealy School Newsletter
19th October 2016
Message from Brenda
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Remember to wear pink this Friday - more info below.
The Glenealy School Fair
This fun filled evening for the entire family is fast approaching. Please mark Friday 11 November 5pm - 8.30pm on your calendar! An event not to be missed!
Older brothers and sisters and ex-students, we need your help! We are looking for secondary students year 7-13 who can help us on the night. This is a great chance to give back to Glenealy and have a great night too. Check your calendar as we know some of you will be returning from your activity week on this date. Please pop your name down on this form if you can help. We would be so appreciative.
Charity - Our community is making a big difference to others.
HK Community Chest
Thanks so much for your generous donations to the HK Community Chest. As a school we raised an amazing $11,568.70!
Pink Day
We have Dress Pink Day this Friday to help raise money for breast cancer research. All students may wear pink or red and bring a donation for this cause. Please ask your child to wear trainers if they have PE.
Box of Hope
I’m sure your child has started to prepare their Box of Hope. The official sticker will be sent home tomorrow in your child’s diary. Please look out for it. Once you have packed and wrapped the box (ensuring it can still be opened for checking) please put the sticker on the top of the box and fill in the details. It’s very straightforward. All gift boxes must be brought to the school office by Monday 31 October. Thanks for making a difference in someone else’s life! Please see the body of the newsletter for more information if you require it.
UNICEF Charity Run
There are only a few more weeks before the run! Every dollar counts in helping UNICEF provide more children and their mothers with life-saving HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
For more information on how to enter or donate please refer to the UNICEF section of the newsletter.
In School Counselling Service
I am pleased to announce that as part of our holistic approach to learning and well-being, we will have a counsellor in the school one morning per week to support students and families. This will be user paid system and will give immediate access to children or families who feel they require extra support. Should your child or your family feel this service would be beneficial please contact Brenda or discuss with a teacher and we can link you with Andrew. For more information about Andrew, please see below. We think this will be a very beneficial service to provide at Glenealy and believe Andrew is a great ‘fit’ for the school and will be an excellent addition to our team.
Dr Andrew Stock
Dr. Andrew Stock was born, grew up in Perth and received his BSc while majoring in psychology from the University of Western Australia. After graduating, he worked in correctional services with inmates and their families just outside of Perth. Andrew then pursued and received his masters and doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology.
Andrew has worked in Hong Kong for four years in schools and NGOs, providing child, adolescent and family counselling, working on multidisciplinary teams, and implementing empirically supported social and emotional learning programs. He has worked specifically with children, adolescents and families facing a variety of challenges for over 10 years. Andrew also has ample experience working with children, adults and families in Hong Kong who are dealing with bereavement, loss, and other forms of trauma.
Andrew recently joined Southside Family Health Centre and provides a full range of psychological assessments, school observations, family therapy, and acceptance- and values-focused individual therapy and counselling. The mindful integration of these approaches and methods facilitates the provision of highly specified and well informed treatment for a range of psychological, emotional, relationship, and academic related problems and challenges.
At Glenealy, Andrew will be offering onsite therapy and counselling, working in conjunction with parents and teachers to provide confidential, sensitive, and specified psychological services to students.
Stay safe in this nasty weather!
Kind regards

PTA
Glenealy School Fair – 11 November 2016
The Glenealy School Fair is less than a month away and the PTA Committee are looking forward to a great evening. Parents, please check the newsletter next week for information on how you can help out with the School Fair.
Each year we have a small number of vendors offering child and family-focused products for sale. If you are interested in taking a table, please find the Vendor Application Form here or send your enquiry to Erika at pta@glenealy.net.
We will be accepting donations for our 2nd Hand Book and DVD stall from 7th November. Please bring gently used books and DVD’s to collection boxes in the playground outside the PTA hut during morning drop off and afternoon pick up.
PTA Subscriptions
A quick reminder that you can leave your PTA subscription payments in the PTA tray in the office or post direct to ESF Centre (address on the invoice). If you are not sure whether you have already paid, please contact Erika at pta@glenealy.net.
Box of Hope
Glenealy participates in the Box of Hope each year, it is a worthwhile and meaningful way for the students to give back in order to make a positive difference to another child's life.
To create a Box of Hope children put toys, games, toiletry items such as toothpaste & a toothbrush, combs, hair-brushes, soap and stationery items (no liquids or food items) into an empty cardboard box (e.g. a shoe box).
The box is then wrapped in colourful paper and the completed Box of Hope sticker the children will bring home from school is stuck to the box. You can also wrap your box in house colours too!
Please do not seal the box - the organisers need to be able to check the contents before they are sent off.
All gift boxes must be brought to the school office by Monday 31 October
Thank you for your support of this worthwhile event.
From the Medical Room
Should your child be unwell on Monday please inform Nurse Sue as it may be advisable to delay the immunisation. If this is the case or your child is absent from school on this day you will need to arrange for your child to see your family Doctor for immunisation privately.
All original documents must be collected by an adult from the medical room to ensure they are returned safely. Please ensure these are collected by Friday 28th October.
Photocopies that were supplied will be sent home in your child's diary.
Book Week
Catch Me Reading Photos Please!
Parents, take a photo of your child reading – somewhere, anywhere!
They can get ‘caught’ reading at home, at the dinner table, brushing their teeth, walking the dog, beside the pool, at the beach, on the playground, at a restaurant etc – be creative!
When you have ONE perfect photo, please email it to library@glenealy.edu.hk. One photo per child please. The deadline for submission is next Tuesday, October 25!
Please include your child's name and class in the email. Prizes for most creative!
Book Swap
Time to spring clean a few books from your bookshelf!
If your child has one or two children's books at home that are gently used and in good condition but no longer needed, please ask your child to bring the book to the library anytime from now.
Children will be able to swap the book with another book to take home during Book Week!
All these second-hand books will be housed in the library and children will come next Thursday or Friday to exchange their books for others. Mrs. Sexton, Year 6 and The Green Team will be there to help!
Bookazine Book Sale
Bookazine will set up a small 'shop' in the Library next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during Book Week. Children may bring some money to school to purchase a new book to take home. We recommend around $100 per child.
Teachers and library staff will be there to assist with student choice.
Bookazine will also set up a table downstairs on the playground on Thursday morning of the parade.
Bookazine has generously offered to give the Library 15% of the total proceeds as in-store credit - so when your child buys a book, you are helping to purchase new books for the library!
Character Dress up Parade
The Character Dress up Parade is next Thursday, October 27.
Children should come to school dressed as a book character. We will have a costume parade in the morning right after drop off, at 8:45 in the downstairs area. Parents are invited stay to see their child's class on parade!
The PTA is providing complimentary tea and coffee on the morning of the parade...so come along, grab a coffee and enjoy the show!
