Southview P.S. Weekly Update
Week of September 24, 2018
Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day is a day to remember what happened to First Nations students at residential schools across Canada. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad, a Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation elder in Williams Lake, B.C., and by her first day at residential school in 1973, when she was six. Schools in the Limestone District School Board will recognize this day in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee's Calls to Action in support of residential school survivors and their families.
Given that September 30th falls on a weekend, Southview staff and students will recognize this day on Monday, October 1st. Activities for the day include:
- students and staff wearing orange shirts
- teachers sharing age-appropriate readings with students focussing on kindness, inclusion, acceptance and reconciliation
- a whole-school ceremony with local Knowledge Keepers who will lead us through the Unity Stomp Dance
- welcoming Grade 6 students from Quinte Mowhawk School to Southview
- Ms. LaRochelle's class participating in a traditional ceremony with the students from Quinte Mowhawk
- sharing of apples and giving back to the land by putting apple cores into the field

Toonies for Terry
It’s time to gear up for our annual Toonies for Terry campaign! On Thursday, September 27th all staff and students will be walking around the large sports field at the back of the school to raise awareness about cancer and to honour the memory of Terry Fox and his amazing accomplishments. Our school goal this year is to raise $3500. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and donations of $20.00 or more (with full donor name and address) will receive a receipt. Cheques and cash are both accepted, with cheques being made payable to The Terry Fox Foundation. Pledge forms have already bee sent home and are due back by Wednesday, September 26th. You can also donate online by clicking the link below. We thank you in advance for your support of this important campaign.
