News from Ms. Hess
In math, we are working with adding and subtracting fractions using the least common denominator. We have also worked to add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Check out IXL items L8, L10, L 18 for extra practice.
In literacy, we read lyric poetry as well as poetry that has become lyric poetry. We made connections, asked questions, and inferred theme.
In writing, we are starting our research projects. In preparation, we are learning how to be critical readers of information online through a strategy called WWWDOT:
Who wrote it and what credentials do they have?
Why did they write it?
When was it written and updated?
Does it meet my needs?
Organization of the site: How is the site organized?
To do list for the future: How might you use this in the future?
We answered these questions for a credible site (Time for Kids) and then looked at a site that REALLY got the kids' attention. See the link below and have your child take you through the WWWDOT strategy!
In time traveling, we used jot dots to take notes on non-fiction text from our social studies textbook. We read about the three distinct areas of the 13 colonies - New England, Middle, and Southern. Next week, we will work in groups to learn about one colony, create a persuasive poster.
