Principal's Update

Hello Tiger Families

Dear TCK Families and Friends,

Welcome to our first issue of the 2020-21 Tiger Tales Newsletter. What a great finish to the 1st semester and 2nd quarter! I am so amazed by all of the hard work put in by our students, teachers, staff and parents during this difficult year. Our teachers put in so much work learning how to teach distance learning and overcoming computer difficulties, distractions and a ton more obstacles during this challenging year. Having seen much of this “behind the scenes” work on campus, I am truly thankful to the group of teachers and staff we have here at Tully C. Knoles. I’m so proud of our students. They have been doing a great job with staying focused and engaged with their teacher. We can always do better though. Please continue to support your child(s) education during these times of Covid-19.

I would love to say I have more of an update about school reopening but we continue to be in a holding pattern. The Governor has lifted the stay-at-home order for California but San Joaquin County is still in the Purple Tier. Therefore, we will continue to provide distance learning for students until further notice. Your patience is greatly appreciated during these ever changing times.

I’d like to invite you to a Principal’s Coffee chat on Friday, February 12th at 8:30am. Make yourself a cup of coffee and let’s chat. I look forward to seeing you and talking about what’s on your mind.

Tully C. Knoles

Lincoln Unified School District

Youth Truth Survey

Monday, Feb. 1st, 8am to Tuesday, Feb. 16th, 11:45pm

This is an online event.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I am writing to ask for 15 minutes of your time to complete an online survey that will help us improve TCK. We have asked YouthTruth – a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the county – to conduct an anonymous survey on our behalf.

Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on February 16, 2021 by clicking this link: http://www.ytsurvey.org/lusdfamily21

Please note:

  • The survey needs to be completed in one sitting. Once you start you can’t go back and finish it later.
  • We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
  • If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you may respond to the survey multiple times - one time per child.
  • If you write any comments, please do not include your name or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership.

We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to us.

If you have any questions about the survey, or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please call the front office.

Sincerely,

Doyal Martin

Atentamente,

Doyal Martin

Counselor's Corner

Counselor’s Corner

These are particularly challenging times that we are all trying to manage the best we can. Here are some great tips on communication.

Communication Tips for Parents with their children: The American Psychological Association states that there are several ways you can help your children in life and at school. Helping your child learn effective coping and communication techniques is key!

1) Be available for your children-Notice times when your kids are most likely to talk (ie; bedtime, mornings at dinner, in the car..) Start conversations, find time for one-on one activities with your kids. Learn about their goals and interests. Initiate conversations with what you are thinking rather than beginning with a question.

2) Let your kids know you are listening-Listen and let them complete their point of view without responding. It may be difficult to hear but, it is important. Stop what your doing and listen. Repeat what you heard them say.

3) Respond in a way your children will hear. Soften strong reactions, express your opinion without putting down theirs; acknowledge it’s ok to disagree, resist arguing, Instead state, “I know you disagree with me, but this is what I think.” Focus on your child’s feelings instead of your own during your conversations.

Remember, Kids learn by imitating what is taught to them. Talk to your kids, don’t criticize, lecture, threaten or say hurtful things. They will follow your lead in how they deal with anger, solve problems and work through difficult feelings. Ask your child what they need from you such as to listen, for advise, helping to solve a problem. Kids learn from their own choices. As long as the consequences are not dangerous, don’t feel you have to step in. Realize your children may test you by telling you a small part of what is being said or what is actually bothering them. Listen carefully to what they say, encourage them to talk and they may share the rest of the story.

Parenting is hard work! Listening and talking is the key to a healthy connection between you and your child. A really good game to play with your kids is a card game called GROK cards that can be purchased on Amazon. These cards are great to utilize as a family to work on building vocabulary to look at feelings and needs. This would be something great to play with you family at dinner or in the evenings before bed to help build the connections between how someone is feeling and what needs are needing to be met based on those feelings.

Please let us know how we may assist you to be the best parent you can be. We are here to work collaboratively with you and your kids. Together we are stronger!

Sincerely,

Ms. Lopes and Mrs. Castro- Counselors, TCK

Virtual Science Camp - Outdoor Education

We are excited to announce our Virtual Outdoor Education Program. We have thought long and hard on how to capture some educational highlights, social emotional learning and the magic of outdoor education. We know how disappointing it is to miss this time honored tradition...this rite of passage…so we are taking this virtual!!! Although this cannot replace a residential experience, we intend to bring the best of Jones Gulch virtually to our students. Please see documents below for additional information.
