May is Mental Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a time to raise awareness around mental wellness as well as elevating the voices of those living with mental illness to help reduce the stigma that so many experience. Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness; therefore, the month of May is dedicated to addressing mental health needs, promoting overall mental health, and providing communities with critical information to understand the continuum of mental health.
School Mental Health, along with LAUSD educational partners, work tirelessly to combat mental health stigma by educating and advocating for protocols that support students and families with mental illnesses, and providing direct services and supports to LAUSD schools.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people of all ages. Therefore, now more than ever, it is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health. The events that have transpired over the past two years may have evoked stress, isolation, and uncertainty; and may have taken a toll on the overall well-being of many individuals. Listed below are tips and resources to support mental health.
Tips on How You Can Stay Committed to Your Mental Wellness:
· Take care of yourself: Life has numerous ups and downs. Some are solvable but others not so much. When your mental health acts up, seek the right treatment, and make yourself better because, after all, life has much more to offer than just pain and suffering.
· Take care of your loved ones: Check up on your friends and family. Many times, all people need is a shoulder to cry on and/or an ear to listen. Support and encourage them if they are being treated for any mental problems.
· Talk about mental health: One of the best ways to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month is by talking about it with your peers. The more you talk about it, the more normalized it will become. This is one of the aims of the month as the stigma attached to mental health has led to countless delays in treatment AND research on the matter.
