Updates from the Literacy Coaches
MARCH MADNESS
As we move into Spring and testing season, I want all of our teachers to reflect on the amazing instruction we have delivered to our students. However, quality Tier 1 instruction is not the only key to stronger student achievement. The volume and quality of independent reading is critical to moving our students forward in developing vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Students in grades 1-5 will be participating in March Madness ... Read to Succeed this spring. We are tracking students' independent reading through Accelerated Reader. The class with the most words read from March 2 -- March 30th will win an ice cold sweet treat.
Research shows that voluminous reading is critical to the development of reading proficiency (Allington, 2014; Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998). “Time spent reading, including reading silently, has consistently correlated strongly with reading achievement.” (Reutzel & Juth, 2014, p. 29). According to Atwell (2007): “Every measure that looks at pleasure reading and its effects on student performance on standardized tests of reading ability—and science and math—tells us that the major predictor of academic success is the amount of time that a student spends reading. In fact, the top 5 percent of U.S. students read up to 144 times more than the kids in the bottom 5 percent.” (p. 107)

Media Updates from Ms. White
Book Fair begins on Monday, March 5th and will run through Friday, March 9th. It is open from 8:20-3:45 daily. We will also be open extended hours on Thursday, March 8th from 4:30-7:30 pm. Students are welcome to visit during their assigned library time, before and after school, and during the 2:30-3:30 time slot (except on Tuesday, March 6th due to 4th Grade/High School Book Buddies).
Also, new book titles are arriving daily and we have more on the way. We are looking at inventory and trying to order more of the series that students are requesting and weeding out old, outdated books. We are also working on creating Maker Space mobile carts for teachers to check out and use with their classes either here in the library or back in their own classrooms.
Stayed tuned for more! Happy Reading!

We are gifting each team with a FULL DAY to plan together.
