Principal's Column
Dear South School Families:
As stated in the previous Cardinal Corner, South Middle School practiced our Crisis Emergency Drills on Thurs., Sept.19, 2019. We received exemplary reviews from both the Arlington Heights Police and Fire Departments regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of all our drills, especially our relocation drill. This was the first time South Middle School relocated students to our safety location. Moving 875 students to Wayside School and back, along with taking attendance twice, took only an hour. We are very proud of our students and staff for their efforts and patience.
As we head toward the end of the first quarter, please take time to visit Schoology and the Parent Portal in PowerSchool, to stay on top of your child's school work. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher.
I want to thank the PTA for organizing a fun and successful 6th Grade Activity Night. There was a great turnout of students, who enjoyed playing basketball and ping pong, listening to music, taking pictures, as well as working on an art project. We appreciate all of the food and water donations.
This Friday night, they will be hosting a 7th Grade Activity Night at the Central Community Center. More information and links listed below.
Have a great two weeks,
Dr. Jim Morrison, Principal
South Middle School
Halloween
As Halloween approaches, we would like to inform everyone how we will celebrate Halloween at South Middle School.
Students are allowed to wear costumes only on Thurs., Oct. 31, 2019. However, it is our goal to have an uninterrupted school day while celebrating this fun holiday. We will not be having any Halloween parties during or after the school day, as they may have experienced in elementary school.
For those students who wish to wear a costume to school on Halloween, the following rules must be adhered to:
- Students are not allowed to change outfits/costumes at school;
- SMS Dress Code will be enforced;
- No costumes depicting violence nor costumes that are inappropriate in a school setting;
- No applying make up or hair spray on school grounds;
- No masks that cover the face are to be worn at school, nor full-coverage face paint (a little face paint is ok);
- No props are to be brought to school;
- No inflatable costumes;
- Students are not allowed to bring candy or treats to school.
We plan to have a safe, productive learning environment on this day, while providing the opportunity for those to wear costumes on Halloween. We look forward to seeing the creative costumes that some of our students will wear.
Please contact the South Middle School administration if you have any questions.
Student Council
Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2019: Student Council will be raising funds for Disaster relief and the Red Cross by accepting donations at lunch Monday -Thursday, as well as accepting them at the door of the girls basketball game on Thursday.

World Music Assembly with Funkadesi
On Fri., Oct. 11, 2019, a small group of musicians from the award-winning world music band Funkadesi, will share stories, songs and instruments from their countries of origin (West Africa, Jamaica, Puerto Rico). The group uses music to open deeper conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion and much more.
