About the Workshop:

You received your Smarter Balanced Assessment results and examined how you compared to the state and maybe to the other schools in your district. Will you be ready for next year’s results in using them at the instructional level to provide indicators of where instructional practices and content are aligned and where there might be mis-alignment?



  • Teams are encouraged – a principal or other administrator must be part of the team
  • Bring Laptops and look at your own data in P+
  • Use a data protocol that applies to all data
  • Pin relevant reports to your dashboard.
  • Drill down to the data that provides instructional insight
  • Explore “other data” that bring people around the table and honor the profession
  • Discuss the value of teacher and student perception data
  • Leave with Quick Reference Guides to create the reports back in your district.
  • Follow up support in your district is available.

Outcomes:

As a result of attending, participants will:


  • Understand value as well as limitations of different types of data

  • Create and use their own reports to disaggregate their district and school data

  • Pin reports to their dashboards and leave with quick reference guides to recreate the data reports on their own back in their district.

About the Presenter

Carolyn Karatzas Eastman is an educator who thrives on problem solving and using data to think outside the box in assisting educators in their approach to learning challenges for students. She has over a decade of experience helping schools examine change and leading educators through a change process.


Carolyn began her 19-year career as an educator as a special education teacher and middle school mathematics teacher at Rye Junior High School for 6 years. She joined the UNH IMPACT Center as the program assistant for mathematics providing outreach and support to schools on standards based mathematics instruction. She was invited to work the Council of Chief State School Officers and Wisconsin Center for Education Research as a national consultant for over a decade to assist schools in using assessment data as well as teacher and student perception data to effectively make instructional improvement. Carolyn is an experienced professional development facilitator with a long history of using the Surveys of the Enacted Curriculum (SEC). She has been on the professional development team creating materials to support the use of SEC and working with teacher leaders in facilitating meaningful dialogue about instructional practices and content.


Most recently, for the past 3 ½ years, Carolyn has been the Assistant Superintendent of Schools at Oyster River Cooperative School District working with administrators and teachers in understanding the Common Core State Standards, leading a process for selecting new resources using the IMET (Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool), transitioning the district to a standards based progress report and assisting Oyster River in creating a new teacher evaluation process.
