Kindergarten
May
Language Arts
It is hard to believe that we are beginning the month of May! We are so proud of how much your children have progressed this year! We are excited to see so much independent reading and writing! As we continue through to the end of the school year, we will be focusing on comprehension. We will focus not only on reading the words correctly in a book, but also understanding what has happened in the story. To accomplish this goal, we will review what good readers do before, during, and after reading. Before we read, we will make predictions about the story based on the title or the picture on the cover. During reading, we will stop occasionally to ask questions, check for understanding, or stop to confirm or change our predictions. After reading, we will summarize the events in the story and explain the sequence of events.
Since your children have been exposed to many types of books this year, they understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction. They expect a fictional story to have characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution. They are expected to learn facts about a particular topic in a nonfiction book. When you read to your child at night, ask him/her to determine if your selection is fiction or nonfiction.
Math
We just completed a unit on shapes. In May, we will continue to strengthen our addition and subtraction fluency. Please continue working on the math facts within five with your child. We will continue to practice story problems with different structures. For example, there are 10 items, how can we give some to Bob and some to Sally. Students will be able to write and explain how they can solve the problem. At the end of May, we will enter our final math unit on place value. This is where children will continue to strengthen their number sense as we prepare for 1st grade!!
