Volume 1, Issue 4

Greeting Lithia Lion Families

We have made it through the first quarter (9 weeks) of the school year! With only 9 weeks left in this semester, I wanted to provide some important information and updates. The majority of this information was shared during the Virtual Parent Meeting last week. Progress Reports are available in Parent Portal. Parents needing access to Parent Portal may obtain it through the DCSS website by clicking resources, parents, and following the prompts. The majority of our students are learning from home in virtual environments. Our daily average in-person attendance is 375. Teachers have reported an increase in the number of students not passing at the 9 week mark as a result of not completing and turning in assignments. Let me be clear! The notion of a "pandemic pass" is not a reality! While the current state of teaching and learning may not be ideal, it is however our current reality. That being said, students will receive the grades they earn based on their performance. Students are expected to complete and turn in assignments. In an effort to support students, we will allow work to be submitted late without penalty. We will allow students an opportunity to re-test after they attend an individual tutoring session on Fridays with their teacher. We will designate up to 45 minutes per class for students on Fridays to engage in lessons specifically designed to remediate and extend the learning from the previous school days. We will offer 15 to 20 minute time slots for students and/or parents to virtually meet with teachers on Fridays. All of these efforts are designed to assist with increasing student performance and grades. Beginning Friday, October 23rd, we will follow a revamped Friday schedule with a focus on "Cleaning up the M.E.S.S." Student attendance and participation is expected and mandatory! More information will be shared with students directly from their teachers. You can also read more about it in the next section! I would also like to encourage our many students participating virtually to adhere to the 5 Tips for Virtual Students! We are seeing a lack of real engagement from several students online and it is time to refocus efforts around those tips. Finally, please be sure to tap into the support offered by our Professional School Counselors. They are standing at the ready to meet the needs of students they serve! It is our goal to see that every student has their SEL needs met to the best of our ability. Let's FINISH STRONG as we work to close out the first semester!

Sincerely,

Principal Joshua
