What is your comfort zone? At one point our individual comfort zones served a purpose. A comfort zone is a state of being in which things feel familiar to us and we are at ease and in control of our environment. In this state we experience low levels of anxiety and stress.
We operate in one of three states. If you think of a target, the comfort zone is at the center, and relatively small for each of us. The next ring in the target is call our optimal performance zone. Stepping out of a comfort zone into the optimal performance zone raises anxiety and generates a stress response. This results in an enhanced level of concentration and focus. Basically, performance is enhanced by some amount of stress. The final ring or state is called the danger zone. If we are operating in this zone performance declines rapidly under the condition of extreme stress and anxiety.
So, while hanging out in our comfort zones sounds pretty good at times, it does little to facilitate our growth. Leaving behind our comfort zones, whether they are personal or professional, can prepare us for the larger leaps of faith that will, in time, refine our purpose. Start small to move into the optimal performance zone and you may discover that it is not as stressful an experience as you imagine it to be. And the joy you feel challenging yourself will nearly always outweigh the initial discomfort.
So, again, what is your comfort zone? And more importantly, what new challenges are you willing to take on to move you into your optimal performance zone?

It's a Great Day to be a Cardinal
The Influence of a Mother
Submitted by: Jill Ragan, Clinton Early Childhood Center Teacher and Director
On April 30th, CECC hosted its third annual Muffins with Moms day, and had the best attendance to date. With nearly 100% of the students having a family member in attendance, the families enjoyed activities that included planting flowers, creative arts, sensory play, and of course muffin eating. With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, it is a good time to bring to the forefront the influence a nurturing mother figure can have on a child’s life. According to an article found in Psychology Today, here are the top ten reasons why moms are so important:
1. If it weren’t for your mom, you wouldn’t be breathing right now. If nothing else, you should thank her for that.
2. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family. They provide the holding place for everyone’s feelings and do their best to keep us from being hurt.
3. Who would kiss your boo-boos to make it all better if she weren’t around? Mothers have the magic touch (and kiss) to help us heal our wounds, physical and emotional.
4. Truly, our mothers worked hard and made sacrifices, so our lives would be better. There are not a lot of people willing to do that, so let her know you appreciate it.
5. Mothers are forgiving—so forgive her in return. Perhaps nothing will be as valuable a gift to both of you as forgiveness. Open your heart and drop your resentments. Now that’s love.
6. When you want to climb the tallest mountain, your mother will make your lunch for you. She is the one who will support your dreams when no one else will. She will also remind you to wear clean underwear.
7. Her boundaries made you a better person. You may not have liked some of her decisions, especially when you wanted to be with your friends, but she did keep you out of trouble.
8. A mother’s ears and eyes hear and see everything. They also have a computer-like memory for all the good (and some of the bad) that came your way. It’s nice to have someone with whom you can reminisce about your whole life.
9. Mom taught you to be a functioning adult. That was her job, and without that, making it through the modern world would be very hard. Your mom may have forced you to do your homework, but now you see how important it was.
10. A mother’s smile, when it is directed toward you, makes your day a whole lot better. All she needs is to know that she has helped you to be and feel your best. Say thank you.
Thank you to all our moms and mother figures! You are your child’s first and best teacher. When you think no one sees how hard you are working to do everything life demands of you, we do. Your children may not be able to recognize it now, but just wait. Life gave them you for a reason and in time with maturity, your children will grow to see how much they need and appreciate you.
