Eagle's View
The official e-newsletter of Corona Elementary
September 1, 2022
As we sprint into the second month of the school year, I can tell you that we have been working hard to establish effective systems to ensure that our students are learning at high levels. Initial i-Ready diagnostic results are telling us that higher percentages of our students are at, or above grade level, in Reading and Math. Another piece of outstanding data to share with you are the results of our state assessments -CAASPP, from 2022-2023. This assessment is given to students in 3rd-6th grade and I am extremely proud of our results, especially after coming back from online learning. Our results demonstrated that 40% of our students were at or above grade level in Reading and 29% in Math. Corona Elementary ranked 7th among the 26 elementary schools in OMSD, and 2nd when specifically looking at our English Learner population. Working together we will definitely continue to grow and perform at high levels!

A Note About Safety
- The driveway area is for loading and unloading students only.
- Vehicles must not be left unattended so busses and traffic can keep moving.
- Pull your vehicle all the way forward to allow as many cars as possible to pull in off the street.
- Students should enter or exit the vehicle once it is stopped next to the red curb.
- Always use vehicle turn signals to let other drivers and pedestrians know your intentions.
- If walking your child to or from school, use the sidewalk areas and the crosswalk only .

College Pride
One of the initiatives in our development of a College Bound environment is to have every classroom adopt a University or College. Students are learning many important facts about their university, along with their location, fight song/cheer, and specialty of degrees. The goal is to expose students to many different colleges and the new vocabulary (i.e. masters, doctorate, syllabus, tuition, scholar, prerequisite, institution) associated with it.
Our next step in the “College Bound” process is to have students wear t-shirts with the logo and mascot of their adopted university. We would have everyone wear their college shirts on Mondays to remind us at the beginning of the week of our ultimate goal. We will be ordering these shirts for everyone promptly in order to have them available before our annual College Day, Thursday, October 13, 2022. This day will include many guest speakers who will be sharing their college experiences with our students. Please assist us in making this event a success by ordering your child’s t-shirt. We will have sample shirts in the office in case you want to verify the size before submitting your order. The cost of the t-shirt will be only $15. Please be on the lookout for an order form in a few weeks.

Understanding Your Student's iReady Diagnostic Results
Eagles Can Earn Their Reading Counts Diploma
Parents, did you know that Eagles can earn degrees based on their reading? Each book a student reads is eligible for Reading Counts! points. By taking and passing the Reading Counts! quiz for each book, students collect points. The more points a student earns, the closer a student gets to his reading goals as well as several rewards and prizes. Students can earn up to four degrees, including Associate, Bachelors, Masters and the highest, a Doctorate. Medals are awarded at each grade level to the student with the highest quiz points! A trophy is awarded at each grade level for the class with the highest quiz points. If students reach the schoolwide goal of reading 25 million words, students will have a celebration at the end of the year. You can check how many Reading Counts! points your student's books are by checking Book Expert Online. Students can also continue their reading online by using the CloudLibrary app to read e-books from the Ontario City Library. Click below to sign up for a library card.
Corona's Math Facts Fluency Challenge begins September 19th!
Eagle Eye On...
Ms. Dora Carrillo
Outreach Consultant
Hello, my name is Dora Carrillo. I am the daughter of Mexican immigrants. I have two sisters and I just happen to be the middle child. I am an Aries. I am married and have one child. She is 10 years old and she is the center of my life. I have two fur babies. They are kitty cats: Aurora (nickname is Tonta) and Ruby. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles. I went to Garfield High School where the Stand and Deliver movie derived from. I went to Cal State Los Angeles for my BA in social work (and later on for my teaching credential), Azusa Pacific University for my MA in Education emphasis in school counseling. I also attended Cal Poly Pomona and successfully completed the administrative credential program. I have been working in the public education sector for 25 years. 8 of those years as a teacher and the rest as an elementary, middle school, and high school counselor. I love to travel. I have been to Europe and Australia. I have also visited certain parts of the United States and Mexico. I am looking forward to visiting Washington DC and to Ireland in the future.
What I like best from Corona is the staff and the kids. Everyone is very welcoming and the kids are awesome! My parents' education was very limited, so they could not help me a lot of the times with schoolwork. The one thing that they did do to help me move on and be successful in school is to model the concept of being hardworking and to never give up when things get difficult. They were resourceful and persistent in overcoming barriers and they passed that along to me.
During Dr. Flores's Friday assembly I saw many kids actively listening to the speaker. It was great to see all of the kids participating! I work at Corona because this great opportunity became available to me to work with this great learning community alongside an awesome staff. My former school was also an awesome school, but it was farther from home.
In addition to visiting new places, I love to cook, and listen to the Eagles, David Bowie, Enanitos Verdes and most 80s music. My family's favorite past time is going to the movies and Dodger games.
