members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
This time of year can be difficult to avoid the germs that go around and look for their next victim. Making it through the winter without a cold, the flu, or some other shared virus/bacteria is a feat in and of itself. Sharing is not always caring.
While I want to see all of our students every day, I will take this opportunity to remind our LMS families that students need to be fever-free for 24 hours (without meds) before returning to LMS. If there are issues below the neck, it is a good precautionary measure for students to stay home for 24 hours.
It's really difficult to avoid everything, but if we all take the necessary precautions then it will be that much easier. Thank you all in advance and stay healthy!

There's a Battle Brewing!
Battle of the Books will kick off on January 27th for all 7th graders. During 3rd quarter, students work in teams of 5-7 to read a total of 15 books. Teams divide the task of reading those books however they choose. The groups compete in a semi-final quiz bowl in their reading class over the books and the winning team from each class competes for the Grand Prize at the Final Battle.
All teams will compete in the final battle on April 2nd, the ½ day before Spring Break. Prizes include going out to lunch, books, art supplies, and Amazon gift cards. Thank you to PTO for supplying the prizes and new books. If you are leaving for Spring vacation early, your student MUST leave his/her group with notes outlining the plots of books he/she read!
While the Reading Class naturally allows for silent reading for 20 minutes 5x per week, please encourage reading and group cooperation at home. This is a much-anticipated event by many 7th grade students. It is also a wonderful opportunity to encourage pleasure reading as well as create lifelong readers!

The Positivity Project
This week we are focusing on perseverance. Take a listen to an inspiring story from speaker, Inky Johnson.
Starting January 27, we will enter into an Other People Matter week and focus on supporting others when they struggle. There is no character card for other OPM weeks.
You can find the character card for the perseverance below. Use it as a guide to have a conversation with your children at home and to spot the strengths in everyday events.
