Aung San Suu Kyi was put under house arrest on July 21st, 1989, because the National league for democracy (led by Aung San Suu Kyi) won the elections but the military leader of Burma, refused to step down and didn't recognise the election results, so he put elected democracy leaders including Suu Kyi under house arrest.
