WEEKLY LITURGICAL READINGS AND REFLECTIONS
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.
Personal Meditation
What do I know about the mystery of Christ’s incarnation? Who or what can help learn more about this central Catholic belief? When do I pray for married people and for those preparing to get married?
NCEA Weekly Reflections, Praying with you and for you as we focus on family and mission in Catholic education.
Blessings Everyone!
What has greatly impacted me this past week, are another round of horrific tragedies of senseless shootings and loss of precious and innocent life. The vulnerability and safety issues strike me with painful awareness, yes. But more so for me it was a spotlight, laser-like focus on the immense need in our world for love.
Two of the greatest "saint-like" famous people that I know of and seek to know more or, Blessed Mother Theresa, and Pope Francis, I think really have that as the core of their messages.
Blessed Mother Theresa is famous for stating that the greatest hunger in the world is really a hunger for love, and "I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love." And Pope Francis as we know is calling on us to be forgiving, merciful, and embracing the outcast and misfit -- which takes total selfless love. We have such gaping holes needing to be filled with love, whether it is between family members, colleagues, organizations, governments, and on and on. What will it take to wake us up and let go of the causes of our darkness, to listen to each other, and let the love of God that is for us and in us start pouring out to bathe each other in new hope and life?
I make no pretenses of having reached the giving of love that I beseech of others. I am on that journey with a passion, but in my own weaknesses and sinfulness. Will you join me?
Two songs, two "oldies" ...
"What the world needs now, is love, sweet love ... it's the only thing that there's just too little of ... no not just for some, but for everyone ..." (What the World Needs Now)
"It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give ... I say love it is a flower, and you it's only seed ..." (The Rose)
Peace, love and courage to all,
In Christ,
Mrs. Saladino
2nd Principal Parent Circle Update
The second Principal Parent Circles meeting was held this past Thursday. Thank you for the increase in attendance and thank you for sharing concerns, questions, and input!!!
- We addressed last month's items, and had continuing discussions about dress code and hand washing between recess and lunch.
- We are looking into further modifications of dress code for phys ed.
- We are looking into further solutions for hand washing including mobile hand washing devices and more intensive hand washing education taking place in the classrooms as we move into flu and cold season.
- One new topic discussed were accreditation, the process we are beginning for our next 5 year continual improvement plan and school and goal study. The process was generally described to all, including the time line to be followed for St. Gabriel. More information concerning this will be shared in follow up meetings and newsletters.
- Another new topic discussed was communication from school to parents via social media such as Twitter or Facebook, something we are looking into.
Topics asked to be continued in future meetings will include dress code, more specifics about accreditation, curriculum, safety and surveys. Let me know if there are others you would like to see addressed.
The next Circle will be Thursday, November 5th, in the Church CR. All parents are invited! Again, I will post an agenda ahead of time, and at the meeting share progress on the previous meeting, and as always have time for open discussion.
God bless,
Mrs. Saladino
IMPORTANT NOTES FROM THE OFFICE
Dismissal Changes during the day
Dear Parents,
The office welcomes phone calls or emails to report changes in dismissal and ask that you keep in mind two things:
1. Please always send email to both Michelle.Clarke@st-gabrielschool.org AND maggie.shero@st-gabrielschool.org to double the chances of timely receipt!
2. ALWAYS ALWAYS if you haven't received a confirmation of receipt email by 1pm please call the school office at 440.352.6169 so we ensure nothing is missed.
Thank you for helping us keep the students safe.
Unscheduled Conference visits with teachers during the school day
Your children's teachers are very eager, open and welcoming to take time to talk, conference and visit with you.
- It is very important however, that this not be random or impromptu before, during or after the school day, but that teachers be able to schedule time with you by planning these into appointments ahead of time.
- Things at times may be urgent we understand, and we will respond to that if needed. The best and quickest avenue is going through the Office staff. We work extremely hard to do the best possible job of knowing and respecting who is where and what is happening. Your consideration and help in checking ahead of time with teachers or the office staff to make appointments thus is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for helping us enable teachers to best meet your needs.

WEEKLY BRIGHT SPOTS
Third Grade Visit to Holden Arboretum
In the area of Science we are excited to be collaborating for the second year with the Holden Arboretum in piloting their “Growing Students in Science” Program at St. Gabriel in grades 2, 3, and 4. Programming is provided both in the classroom and at Holden, with the goal of impacting student interest and proficiency in the natural science concepts covered in the state science standards. The Holden staff is again facilitating three programs for St. Gabriel, fall (at Holden), winter (in the classroom), and spring (at Holden) for each grade level. Holden provides all program materials, and instruction and professional development for the teachers.
After targeted professional development and support from Holden Arboretum staff for this year's Fall program, our third grade science teachers spent several days presenting classroom science lessons to their students focused on the topic "life cycles." To apply what students learned from these lessons, and experience hands on learning in authentic outdoor education, our third graders embarked on their field trip to Holden this past Friday!
Students spent an exciting and fruitful day of learning! After reviewing knowledge and concepts, they took hikes into the Arboretum woods and along trails. Using observation, inquiry, and collection skills, students gathered samples of critters such as spiders, salamanders, and toads, plants, leaves, and nuts to discover and understand the interdependence of all life cycles in their habitats.
Looking forward to Grade Four's trip tomorrow, and Grade Two's trip on October 21st!

School and Grizzly Apparel Update
Dear Parents,
All summer/early fall orders for gym clothes, school sweatshirts and Grizzly wear have been delivered.
New orders are due November 24th. Goal is delivery by Christmas!
Did you know that we have a wonderful apparel team of PTU parent volunteers who make all of this possible? ~ guided by Mrs. Schauer, Mrs. Osterman and Mrs. Mann's leadership and aided by countless of behind the scenes volunteers who sort/organize and deliver orders. We thank all of our PTU parent volunteers!! If you'd like to volunteer to help with the school apparel effort please contact Mrs. Schauer at barb.schauer@roadrunner.com

PTU Sunshine Committtee
The goal of the St. Gabriel PTU Sunshine Committee is to bring a little ray of sunshine, and perhaps a smile(!), to members of our school community that are not feeling very “sunny”. We also like to celebrate happy occasions too! We do this by sending home a card, small gift, or an act of service.
· Staff: weddings / new babies
Currently, we are notified by the front office of anyone in need of services. If parents or students notify the office of an issue occurring within the family, we are then notified and items are delivered (through the school) within a week. Our biggest concern is that someone is missed! Maybe the family does not notify the office, but they share information with you. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
If you hear of anyone in need of our services, please contact the front office or feel free to directly e-mail us.

BOK Jr. Leadership Club
Attention ALL 6th - 8th graders
BOKjr Leadership Club information for the 2015 - 2016 school year. Our first meeting is Tuesday, October 6, 2015.
BOKjr Leadership Club is open to ALL 6th-8th graders and meets the first Tuesday of each month. The primary goal of BOK is to help the youth to grow closer to Christ and our community through social, spiritual and service activities. Our foremost focus is SERVICE and coordinates so well with Pope Francis’ vision of service!
“An authentic faith – which is never comfortable or completely personal – always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family which dwells here, with all its tragedies and struggles, its hopes and aspirations, its strengths and weaknesses.” ~ Pope Francis
In BOKjr, we strive to teach our youth leadership skills and create a Christ-like community through their service to others. If our children are encouraged to deepen their relationship with Christ, they will also build healthy, Christian relationships with each other and the adults in their lives!
We meet on the first Tuesday of each month, in the MPR from 2:30-3:45pm. At least 2 of the Dayschool teachers are actively involved in these meetings. Every meeting has a different Service focus and leadership skill taught to the preteens, as well as learning a different method of praying each month!
Join us on October 6, 2015, for our first BOKjr Leadership Club Mtg.!
