Riojas Elementary School
First Day of School 2017-2018
First Day of School
Morning Procedures
Doors will open at 7:10 AM. Parents may walk their students to class on the first day of school, if needed. If you do, we ask that you only stay a few minutes so that students can quickly begin their first day of school. You may walk your children to their classes on the first day and the remainder of the first week. After that, if you walk them in, we ask that you use the “Hug Zone” by the cafeteria and then allow your Patriots to walk to class on their own. We will have teachers stationed throughout the halls to help our little ones and all new students find their classrooms.
The Parking Lot and Car Lane
If you are dropping off your child in the car lane, you must only use the front entrance of the school. We are no longer using the bus lane for drop off. We will have some staff at the entrance of the school to assist students. Please remember that many many parents will be parking in and around Riojas on the first day. Be Kind and be patient. It is going to take a while to get all the students in the building and all the cars in and out of the parking lot.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast is served every day in our cafeteria starting at 7:15am. You can log in at www.myschoolbucks.com to create an account or add money to an existing account for breakfast or lunch at Riojas.
Afternoon Procedures
School dismissal just takes time at the beginning of every school year. We are getting to know your children and their go-home routines, as well as becoming familiar with the faces of the students' family member who is picking them up. Buses sometimes run a little late as the bus drivers are learning the students, too.
If you are using the car lane for parent pick-up, remember to place your car lane sign with your child's name on your VISOR. This is new this year and an effort to make this process easier for you. A large binder clip or a big rubber band may be a good way to secure the paper to your visor. As you are waiting in line, remember we are doing our best and this will get quicker. Also, please be aware that day care vans will be coming into the parking lot to pick up from the back of the gym. Please let them enter the lot and the back of the school. They will be very thankful for the help to keep them on their schedule.
If you are going to walk in to pick up your child at the gym, please have your parent sign available. We respectfully ask that you not block the car lane area, so we can keep those parents moving, too.
We will be working on our efficiency over the first week and will let you know of any adjustments, if needed.
Be Kind. Be Confident. Be Brave. Be You.
I can't wait to see you at school on the first day!

Reminders for the First Week
Be Kind. Be Confident.
- Everyone wants to see their child off and greet them on the first day. There are no shortcuts and nothing is wrong. Dropping off and picking up just take a long time the first days of school.
- Everything isn’t perfect. New staff members, new enrolling families, new boundaries… Changes mean adjustments and things change all the way to the last minute when schools are enrolling families. Please be patient. We will be able to make adjustments and your students are going to have an outstanding year.
- Buses are not exactly on time. Traffic is never as bad as it is when school is in session. Our transportation department has had drivers running bus routes for days, but traffic slows everything down. In addition, kids are slow to get on buses at first.
- Administrators and counselors are seldom in their office. We are out helping kids, supporting teachers, and solving problems. We will respond to messages as soon as possible.
Be Brave.
We are going to love your child almost as much as you. We are here to take care of these kids, keep them safe, and help them learn. We are your partner and can't wait to see you and your children!
