New Norway School

October 2022

Creating a Culture of Excellence!!

From the Admin Desk

It seems like September flew by this year and here we are in October…

Volleyball season is in full swing and it has been great to see the action in the gym. Cross country running season is moving along and nearing completion with some of our runners heading to Provincials this weekend. Good luck to all of our teams and thank you to all of the coaches and volunteers that make our programs successful!

During the 2022/2023 school year students at New Norway School will again be completing Provincial Achievement Tests (Grade 6 and 9) and Diploma Exams (Grade 12) as part of Alberta Education’s provincial testing program.

Halloween is around the corner. Please watch for communication from your child’s homeroom teacher around activities each class has planned.

Our Remembrance Day ceremony this year will take place on Tuesday, November 8th starting at 10:45 am. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.

New Norway School course add/drop deadline is fast approaching.(for example from the -1 to -2 level). For the first semester this date will be October the 26th. I would ask that parents and students be mindful of this date and monitor progress in these courses with the classroom teacher as these dates do occur before the first report card is issued.

Cooler weather is here and as such I would like to remind everyone that it is important for students to dress appropriately for the conditions. Please ensure that your child comes to school with their coats, toques, gloves/mittens and winter footwear when needed for the weather conditions.

The protocol for bus transportation during inclement weather will remain the same as last year. On days of inclement weather, bus drivers will make a decision about whether or not it is safe to operate their bus on their route for that day. In the event that one or more buses does not operate, this information will be passed along to the Battle River School Division transportation department and an automated phone fan-out will be initiated for affected routes. In addition information will be updated on the Battle River School Division website with respect to bus operation.

Report cards will be distributed on Friday, November 18th.

Student assessment and attendance information is currently available online through our PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Just a reminder that there will be no school for students from the 9th to 15th of November. School resumes on Wednesday, November 16th.

Parent Lockdown information

Battle River School Division has an emphasis on safe and caring schools. Part of providing a safe learning environment is helping students and staff be prepared for an emergency.

Our school holds six fire drills each year and we will also be holding two lockdown drills – one in October and another in the spring.

A lockdown is when all the students and staff are tucked into their classrooms (or another safe, lockable area of the school) to avoid an intruder inside the building. This is not a situation we expect our schools to encounter but, just like a fire drill, practicing will help us all be better prepared if such an incident does occur.

When we hold our lockdown drill, discussions will also take place with students in a calm, sensitive, age-appropriate way, so as not to generate anxiety or fear. If you’d like to speak to your children ahead of time, to provide additional reassurance that they are safe at school and drills are what we do so we are prepared ‘just in case’, we would welcome your support.

It is possible we will have police officers present for the drill, as well as representatives of the school division. Their role is to help us evaluate our preparedness and suggest any changes we might make in future drills.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Leading the Spartan Way

On September 26 and 27, four golfers from New Norway School swung their way to the provincial senior high school Silver Medals. The team, consisting of Jesse Brown, Alyssa Lundstrom, Ariana Lundstrom, and Julie Snider, was solidly supported by their families and coach (Jon Lindstrand) over two days of intense competition at the Turner Valley Golf Club and the Highwood Golf and Country Club. Held in High River, this year's ASAA provincials had a record number of 85 female and 131 male golfers with teams from every corner of the province represented.
