CHEETAH JOG A THON 2022
A fun time was had by all! Even the adults who were walking, jogging or simply helping cheer on our students were having fun!
Each grade level represented a different country from around the world! Our Jog a Thon tied in with the World Track and Field competitions coming to Eugene this summer, and each had a flag of their country.
Please have your child return their Jog a Thon envelopes to school ASAP.
RECESS GAME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We would like to invite parents and guardians to come play with us! If you have an idea for a game, craft, or group activity that you could lead at recess, please let us know. Examples of activities are kickball, soccer, chalk drawing, basketball, Art Cart, Dance Party, and more! Contact your teacher or the office about your ideas and availability.
All recess activity leaders need to complete the 4J Volunteer Application, which includes proof of COVID-19 Vaccination. To learn more, go to www.4j.lane.edu/hr/volunteers/
CLOTHES FOR STUDENTS
Has your elementary school age child grown out of some of their clothes, shoes or jackets? We could use some gently used clothes for students that may need a change of clothes at school.
Please only donate if gently used, clean and appropriate for school. Thank you!

Mental Health Resource
4J families, does your student or a family member need help with mental health care? Eugene School District 4J is providing students, staff and their families free access to Care Solace, a confidential care coordination service, to help provide an additional layer of care and address the growing need for mental health care and substance abuse treatment.
Care Solace will connect you to verified community care providers matched to your needs, including providers that accept your medical insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or sliding scale options for those without insurance. Their care companion team is always available. Get help finding care providers that meet your needs at caresolace.com/eugene or call 888-515-0595 anytime, day or night, in any language. (Note, Care Solace is not a mental health service provider or emergency response service. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1 or the National Suicide Hotline at 800-273-8255.)

Suicide Prevention Training
Every first Wednesday of the month is Walk, Bike & Roll to school. Please encourage students to get to school by bike, scooter, skateboard, walking (just so happens to be a Walking School Bus Day!), carpool, catch the bus...!
Hey, and you can, too!
The class with the most participants will win a bike-powered smoothie party! And we will have raffle prizes too! So join in on the fun and get out for some before school exercise!
ACE AWARDS!
Please join us for the livestream on 4J's Facebook page on Tuesday, May 10 starting at 6 p.m. for camaraderie, celebration and recognition of the terrific work of 4J's educators.
The celebration will recognize all of the record-breaking 234 nominees. This year's champions in education will be named in four categories—teachers and licensed specialists, classified staff, administrators and supervisors, and volunteers—and a lifetime achievement award will be presented.
Congratulations to our Chávez nominees:
Whitney Oliver, Special Education Teacher
Natalie Reed, Title I Educational Assistant
Jason Schanze, Kinder Educational Assistant
Nora Young, Educational Assistant (aka "The Recess Queen")
COUNSELING CORNER WITH SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER MS. SHANNON
Pictured above is our MindUp Gratitude Tree with leaves representing people that we're feeling thankful to have in our lives. All three 1st grade classes, and so far one of the 2nd grade classes, have contributed leaves as we learned more about what gratitude can do for our brains in our MindUp lessons. You'll see a number of leaves dedicated to moms (Happy Mother's Day!), dads, grandparents, siblings, friends, staff members, pets, and others who show up for these awesome students in important ways. It was really heartwarming. We'll continue to add to our tree throughout the month of May. *Special shout out to Ms. Maria, one of our kindergarten EA's, who contributed the beautiful blossoms. First grade classes have been wrapping up with our MindUp lessons which conclude with a group act of kindness. Your child's teacher can fill you in on details!
Upper grades continue to work with Sources of Strength curriculum, during which we've focused on skills of emotion identification and regulation, positive friendships, and connecting to support. Speaking of which...May is Mental Health Awareness Month! I encourage you to check out Mental Health America's website for some great resources. There are so many fantastic resources out there, and I'd love to hear from you about any of your favorites!
Our school district is recently piloting a partnership with a program called Care Solace which--with your (parent/guardian) permission--helps connect students to mental health providers in our area who meet your needs (for availability, insurance, etc.). If you are interested in a referral, please reach out to me by phone or email. For any more immediate or crisis needs, I'm linking crisis resources here.
In terms of teacher-driven SEL (Social Emotional Learning), most grade levels continue to learn about how to identify and regulate our emotions, as well as get along with others and problem-solve peacefully. Feel free to check in with your child's teacher to learn more about their SecondStep lessons or about Conscious Discipline for grades K-1.
Lastly, I've continued to update my virtual office where you'll find a variety of resources, especially in the caregiver corner. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss your student or family's needs. I'm available via email: sell_s@4j.lane.edu or by phone at 541-790-5383 (direct office line).
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon
