Learning To Surf!

This certainly is a "wave" we didn't expect! However, we are committed as a band department to make the best of it and to navigate this wave the best we can! First, we want to acknowledge the loss of many significant trips and performances that were lost due to this health crisis. Our students have worked very hard preparing for these performances. Our heart goes out to everyone who had to cancel trips and great experiences due to this crisis. Our goal is to focus on what we can control and to build for the future! We encourage everyone to stay safe and to follow the advice of the CDC and state and local government. Health and safety come first to be sure!

Please read the information below to learn more about cancellations and plans moving forward.

Riding The Wave

All of the district band directors met last week to collaborate and discuss online learning options for students during the closure. Each director will communicate with students regarding specific assignments and plans moving forward. In general, however, here are some tips:

  1. Take band instruments home Monday AND Tuesday night in the event that we close sooner than expected.
  2. Continue practicing every day. Stay positive and set goals for practice sessions!
  3. Set a specific time and place each day to practice.
  4. Listen to recordings and record practice sessions.
  5. Stay in touch with band directors and look to Google Classroom for assignments and activities to stay engaged.

High School Auditions

High School Auditions will be scheduled for the week after we return to school. Continue to practice and prepare! Look for more information as we approach our return date!

5th Grade Mouthpiece Sampling Postponed

Due to the school closings, we will postpone our mouthpiece sampling and initial recruitment process with the current 5th graders. We will communicate a new plan when we get more information! Tell those younger siblings and friends that we haven't forgotten about them!

Butter Braid Due One Day Sooner

Originally, the Butter Braid fundraiser was due this Wednesday, however, due to the school district closing forms will be due THIS Tuesday. Please return forms to your band director, Mr. Gleason, or to Lindsey Hess, 6821 Village Park Drive, Madison.

Lindsey will try to reschedule delivery for April 7th but this may have to be pushed back if we are not in school yet. She will advise us of any updates!

CHUMS On Tour!

The 9th Grade Band and Wind Symphony took their annual overnight tour to UW-Oshkosh, working with Dr. Devin Otto, and UW-Stevens Point, working with Dr. Michael Butler.

Visiting Conductor in Residence

The following week, Cardinal Heights welcomed Dr. Colleen Richardson from Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Richardson conducted a piece with each of the bands, bringing musicality, humor, and positive spirit to her connections with students and music.
