The Week in Review
Last week students worked with a nonfiction piece called "An Indian Father's Plea" in our curriculum workbooks. The focus of the reading was understanding author's purpose, recognizing point of view in a text, and identifying an author's use of the rhetorical appeals -- ethos, pathos, and logos -- to develop an argument.
The upcoming week
During this shortened week, we will finish our work with "An Indian Father's Plea," and then move on to a new nonfiction text, "The Origins of Intelligence." The focus of our work with the "Origins" text will be recognizing logical fallacies and considering their impact on an argument. Most likely, this work will continue into the week of February 19.
You can see the daily schedule below. This may change slightly as the week progresses depending on how things transpire in class.
Parent Information
Carroll University education field students: This semester I have five young women from Carroll University working with me in my classes -- Ms. Radish, Ms. Brokering, Ms. Gates, Ms. Dooley, and Ms. Dow. Each of these students is working towards an English teaching degree at Carroll University, and they are taking a class this semester which requires 40 hours of experience in a high school English classroom. As part of their experience, they will be observing classes, working with students in small groups, and, eventually, teaching a lesson or two. I will always be in the room when the field students are with students, and I will be working with them very closely as they plan their lessons to make sure their materials and methods are appropriate for our curriculum and my students.
Phone policy: I so appreciate that all students have pleasantly complied with the implementation of the cell phone policy and are willingly putting their phones into the room caddy. I have seen a difference already in students' engagement in classwork. Thank you for your support at home for this policy implementation!
